Legendary musician David Thomas, known as the leader of Pere Ubu and a trailblazer in avant-rock, passes away at the age of 71. His memory continues to resonate with fans and colleagues alike due to his groundbreaking creativity and enduring musical impact.
On Wednesday, it was confirmed that Thomas, known for his mysterious and firm demeanor, succumbed to a long-standing illness. Pere Ubu shared the news on Facebook, stating that he passed away in his hometown of Brighton & Hove, with loved ones by his side during his final moments.
The announcement poignantly mentioned that the radio was playing songs from MC5 at the time of his passing. The text stated, “It is where he wished to be laid to rest – his rural home in Pennsylvania, specifically ‘put in the barn.'” (This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using simpler and more conversational language.)
Thomas, a significant figure in the development of underground rock music, rose to fame in the mid-1970s as part of Rocket From the Tombs, an innovative punk band hailing from Cleveland, Ohio. Later, he joined Pere Ubu, a group that ventured beyond conventional rock standards and into the unique “avant-garage” genre, as they themselves labeled it.
During the timeframe from 1975 to 1982, Pere Ubu experienced their most prolific phase. Over the years, they released a total of 19 studio albums, expanding their discography on Bandcamp to over 40 titles, many of which were live recordings. Thomas continued performing and recording for decades beyond this period, and his creative pursuits also encompassed solo projects.
After concluding his time with the band, Thomas had spent the final stretch working on what he believed would be his final album. According to a post on their Facebook page, “David Thomas and his group have been recording a new album. He understood it was to be his swan song. We will strive to complete mixing and finalizing the new album so that his last music can be enjoyed by all.
Beyond this point, he provided guidelines for the task to carry on archiving all live show recordings through the official Bandcamp platform. His autobiography was almost done, and we’ll see it through for him. Moreover, Pere Ubu’s Patreon will be managed as a community by communex, according to the statement.
Before embarking on a career in music, David Thomas had previously worked as a journalist and columnist, using the pen name Crocus Behemoth. He leaves behind his spouse and offspring.
