Who Was Brian James? Exploring the Life and Legacy of The Damned Guitarist Amid His Death at 70

As a devoted admirer, I’m saddened to share that Brian James, the iconic guitarist and songwriter behind The Damned and The Lords of the New Church, departed at the age of 70. On March 6, 2025, he peacefully left us, surrounded by his cherished family.

1) His family announced his passing through a Facebook post. Known for shaping early punk culture, James wrote The Damned’s debut single, “New Rose,” which was released in October 1976. This song is often recognized as the United Kingdom’s inaugural punk single.

With profound sorrow, we share the news of the passing of a remarkable musical trailblazer, Brian James – an exceptional guitarist, songwriter, and a genuine gentleman in every sense.

Apart from being a member of the band, James was also responsible for penning most of the songs on their first album, titled “Damned Damned Damned.” This album was released in February 1977. The band consisted of lead vocalist Dave Vanian, bassist Captain Sensible, drummer Rat Scabies, and James.

Captain Sensible pens a touching homage to his deceased bandmate, expressing on platform X: “What a wonderful individual I consider myself fortunate to have crossed paths with so long ago. Somehow, he decided to team up with me in our shared pursuit of the musical revolution we came to call punk.

Despite The Damned not making significant chart appearances in the U.S., they left a profound impact as their songs were featured on popular shows such as Miami Vice, That ’70s Show, and The Simpsons. After their 1977 album, Music for Pleasure, they took a brief hiatus from each other.

Afterward, James established the brief-lived Tanz Der Youth and embarked on the Never Say Die! Tour with Black Sabbath. Additionally, they put out a single called “I’m Sorry, I’m Sorry / Delay” in 1978.

In time, James created the short-lived Tanz Der Youth and performed on the Never Say Die! Tour with Black Sabbath. Moreover, they published a single named “I’m Sorry, I’m Sorry / Delay” in 1978.

As a dedicated devotee, I’d express it like this: “Throughout the years, I’ve been constantly seeking fresh adventures and collaborating with diverse musicians. Following this path, I established The Dripping Lips and made guest appearances on various records, all while forming the Brian James Gang and working on my solo projects. My creativity never ceased, making me a musical marvel for over six decades. Notably, my music has been featured in film and TV soundtracks.

Throughout his long career, he kept adding to music through his legendary talents. Notably, in 2012, he published a solo acoustic album titled “Chateau Brian.” Additionally, James collaborated with Iggy Pop, Wayne Kramer from The MC5, and Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses. More recently, in 2022, the original members of The Damned held a series of concerts in the UK.

Brian James has departed, leaving behind his beloved spouse, Minna. His life continues through the presence of his son, Charlie, and his daughter-in-law, Alicia.
