As an ardent fan of the late, great Art Evans, I find myself profoundly saddened by the news of his passing. Yet, as I reflect upon his illustrious career spanning over four decades, I cannot help but marvel at the indelible impact he has left on the world of cinema and television.
Acting legend Art Evans, recognized for his performances in Die Hard 2 and A Soldier’s Story, sadly passed away on December 21 at the age of 82. It has been officially announced that he passed away tranquilly in his sleep, with loved ones by his side.
With great sadness, I must inform you that Art is no longer with us, as his wife, Babe Evans, conveyed in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. At the moment, we kindly ask for your understanding and respect our privacy during this difficult time. A memorial service will be arranged later on for close friends and relatives to pay their respects. Thank you.
In the movie Die Hard 2, Evans earned significant acclaim for his portrayal of Leslie Barnes. As an employee at an air traffic control tower, Barnes teamed up with John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, to counter a band of terrorists in this thrilling action film. His acting was particularly noteworthy due to its powerful emotion and depth.
In the 1984 play “A Soldier’s Story,” Evans took on a notable role as Private James Wilkie. Sharing the screen with Denzel Washington and Adolph Caesar, his performance was highly appreciated. The movie, skillfully directed by Norman Jewison, received critical acclaim.
Besides appearing in various well-known movies, Evans is also recognized for his roles in films such as Christine, Big Time, Youngblood, National Lampoon’s Class Reunion, Fright Night, School Daze, Bitter Harvest, Tales from the Hood, and Metro. In the film Christine (1983), one of his earliest credited performances, he portrayed the initial victim of the malevolent car titled “Christine.
Beyond his film roles, Evans also had a significant career on television. He made appearances in well-known shows like MASH, Hill Street Blues, Monk, The X-Files, Family Matters, and A Different World. In A Different World, he portrayed Mr. Johnson, the father of Ron Johnson (played by Darryl M. Bell).
Into the new millennium, Evans persisted in his acting endeavors, landing roles in films such as Anderson’s Cross (released in 2010), Last Man Standing (premiered in 2011), and the comedy series Real Husbands of Hollywood. Spanning four decades, this prolific actor accumulated over one hundred twenty acting credits throughout his career.
Born on the sun-kissed shores of Berkeley, California, on March 27, 1942, I – Arthur James Evans – found my passion for acting nestled within the walls of Frank Silvera’s Theater of Being, right in my hometown. One of my earliest unforgettable moments on stage was when I took part in The Amen Corner, a captivating play that made its way to Broadway in 1965.
Evans leaves behind his wife Babe Evans and his son Ogadae. Sadly, his other son, Sage, who passed away in 2016, had gone before him.
