As a longtime fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic saga, I must say that Celebrían is one of the most tragic and yet significant characters in Middle-earth’s rich tapestry. Her life story, filled with love, loss, and ultimate sacrifice, resonates deeply with me.
For a little while now, Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, has teased that this season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will feature an unexpected kiss. Of course, when fans heard that, every single ship and its mother claimed that the mystery kiss involved their favorite pair. Haladriel/Saurondriel shippers (Galadriel x Sauron fans), you bet they claimed it. Adariel shippers (Adar x Galadriel fans), I know for a fact they claimed it because I did it on our behalf. Even Celebrimbor x Galadriel truthers got in on the action. But, at the end of the day, The Rings of Power season two’s mystery kiss really did belong to the last expected people on earth it might have belonged to. But even though this kiss might shock The Rings of Power fans, The Lord of the Rings lore indicates that this kiss was less romantic and more strategic. Let’s take a look at The Rings of Power‘s kiss-gate and break down: who kissed, why the kissed, why we don’t really think it means anything deep, and what The Lord of the Rings has to say about it.
Who Kissed on The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 7? Galadriel and Elrond That Shared a Kiss
Indeed, that’s the sequence of events. Many spectators were invested with various emotions towards their favorite characters, but surprisingly, it was Elrond and Galadriel who shared a kiss in “The Rings of Power.” In the tent of Adar, just before Elrond departed to leave Galadriel facing captivity or even death, they exchanged a passionate kiss that left viewers stunned everywhere.
Why Did Elrond and Galadriel Kiss on The Rings of Power Season 2?
To clarify, it’s highly unlikely that Galadriel and Elrond share romantic feelings in “The Rings of Power”. In the scene where they kissed, Elrond was not yielding to affection but rather using it as a strategic move against Adar and his Uruk. They were so taken aback by the unexpected kiss that they momentarily forgot their mission. It appears that Elrond’s intention behind this kiss was not to express his true feelings for Galadriel, but instead to divert attention while he discreetly gave her a pin from his cloak. Smart as she is, Galadriel swiftly used the pin to pick a lock, probably to escape or carry out another plan.
Did the Kiss Reveal Anything to Us About Galadriel and Elrond?
In a different take: It’s not something I fully agree with, but this scene does shed light on a sneakier side of Elrond that we don’t often see. For the sake of discussion, I included this part to point out that in my opinion, this kissing scene from “The Rings of Power” offers some insights about Adar that perhaps even surpass what we learn about Galadriel or Elrond. It seems clear to me that Elrond was confident Adar would yield to his request to bid farewell to Galadriel because, let’s face it, Adar has a tender heart. And yes, I did express that thought.
Why The Lord of the Rings Lore Rules Out Romance Between Galadriel and Elrond on The Rings of Power Despite Their Kiss
One reason why a romantic kiss between Elrond and Galadriel from “The Rings of Power” is unlikely is due to the lore established by Tolkien himself. To avoid spoilers, if you’d rather not delve deeper into the storyline, here’s a brief summary: Elrond will eventually marry Galadriel’s daughter, Celebrían. This future union between them doesn’t preclude a romantic kiss in the series, but it does make such a development improbable, considering they share familial ties later in life. Such a situation might feel awkward for both Elrond and Galadriel when they interact romantically with their respective partners, Celebrían and Arwen, who is destined to become the queen of Gondor, man, and Middle-earth.
Who Is The Lord of the Rings‘ Celebrían?
To clarify, Celebrían, a character from “The Lord of the Rings,” is the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. She later marries Elrond and gives birth to Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen. However, her story takes a tragic turn when she’s captured by orcs during a visit to her parents in Lórien. The orcs subject her to torture and poisoning. Despite being saved and physically healed by Elrond, the emotional trauma from the attack leaves her spirit and mind shattered. In her sorrow, she departs Middle-earth prematurely, choosing instead to sail westward before the events of “The Fellowship of the Ring.” It’s believed that she eventually reunites with her family in Valinor.
Well, as a gamer diving into Middle-earth lore, I’ve come across Celebrían – a character whose tale unfolds in the Third Age, which sadly lies beyond the boundaries of the Prime Video series. Yet, in an earlier epoch, the Second Age, where The Rings of Power is set, Celebrían encounters Elrond and their hearts secretly entwine. It’s only when they reach the Third Age that they decide to walk together as husband and wife.
I’m curious to find out whether any aspects of Celebrían’s tale from “The Lord of the Rings” will be incorporated into “The Rings of Power.
Where Is Celebrían on The Rings of Power?
In the Amazon Prime Video series “The Rings of Power”, where does the character Celebrían fit in? So far, only Celeborn from Galdriel’s family has been introduced. We know that Celeborn disappeared during the War of Wrath, prior to the Second Age. This could imply that Celebrían either exists in the world of “The Rings of Power” and we haven’t seen her yet, or she hasn’t been born yet, possibly hinting at a time jump in season three. However, before we can meet Celebrían, it seems we need to find Celeborn first. Although elves experience time differently, it will be intriguing to observe how the series portrays the relationships between Elrond, Celebrían, and Galadriel, given their close connection, if not a romantic one. But, if Elrond is to share a romantic moment on “The Rings of Power”, Celebrían appears to be the most likely candidate.
Many people thought Mirdania was secretly Celebrían, but given Mirdania’s death in season two, episode seven, it appears that is not so. We’ll have to wait and see if Celebrían surfaces on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
