Who Is WONDER MAN’s Trevor Slattery? His Wacky MCU History, Explained

Get ready for all eight episodes of Wonder Man to be released on January 27th – perfect for a binge-watching session! The series centers on Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen), an actor who dreams of playing a superhero, and surprisingly, has superpowers. However, those powers are actually getting in the way of his ambitions. He finds an unlikely ally in veteran actor Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley), who you might recognize from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances. Before Wonder Man arrives, let’s recap Trevor Slattery’s interesting journey so far in the MCU.

Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3 as the Mandarin

Trevor Slattery is first introduced in Iron Man 3 as someone who seems to be the Mandarin, a dangerous terrorist. He appears in videos taking responsibility for bombings, including one that injures Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s head of security. This leads a traumatized Tony Stark to publicly challenge the Mandarin and expose his location. The Mandarin retaliates, forcing Tony to leave his home and team up with Rhodey to find him.

The team learns the explosions weren’t caused by terrorists, but by soldiers having dangerous reactions to an experimental treatment called Extremis. Aldrich Killian and his company, Advanced Idea Mechanics, falsely claimed terrorism to hide the truth. They also find the Mandarin’s hideout, only to discover the Mandarin is actually Trevor Slattery, a struggling British actor who’s being paid by AIM and Killian with drugs and money. He’s unaware of the larger scheme and is ultimately arrested and sent to Seagate Prison.

All Hail the King Explores Trevor Slattery’s Time in Prison… and His Escape

Released in 2014, the short film All Hail the King tells the story of how Trevor ended up in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Even while in prison, Trevor manages to live comfortably, with a butler assisting him. He’s approached by a journalist, Jackson Norriss, who wants to get his account of the events surrounding the Mandarin.

Norriss informs Slattery that his depiction of the Mandarin angered many people, particularly the Ten Rings organization. Slattery, completely unaware of the group, learns about both the Mandarin and the Ten Rings from Norriss. Norriss then reveals he’s actually a member of the Ten Rings and helps Slattery escape prison to meet his leader, Xu Wenwu. While the initial plan was to execute Slattery, Wenwu is impressed by his acting skills and instead makes him a court jester.

Trevor Slattery in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

While imprisoned with the Ten Rings, Slattery surprisingly gets sober and turns his life around, even becoming friends with a creature named Morris. Shang-Chi and Xialing help him escape, and together they journey to Morris’s magical home, Ta Lo. In the end, Slattery fights alongside Shang-Chi and the people of Ta Lo against the Ten Rings in a climactic battle.

What Happens to Trevor Slattery in Wonder Man?

Honestly, I’m really curious to see what happens with Trevor. He’s heading back to Hollywood hoping to revive his career, which is a big ask, considering the circumstances. He escaped prison early and, let’s face it, he’s pretty well known as ‘that terrorist guy’ from a movie. He does have some fans, but I’m just not sure if Hollywood will be willing to give him another shot. It’s a tough industry, and that kind of baggage is hard to overcome.

He’ll become a mentor to Simon Williams, demonstrated by his program, The Slattery Method, and guide the up-and-coming actor. However, a hidden motive will create a conflict for him. We’ll find out what happens when the entire season of Wonder Man is released.
