When Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire Lathalia, was first introduced in Critical Role Campaign 4, he seemed like a typical Dungeons & Dragons character – a little odd and unusual in appearance. He came across as a charming socialite, perhaps a bit untrustworthy. We learned he worked as a curator of magical artifacts at the Archanade museum in Dol-Makjar, and enjoyed parties and fashionable clothes. While his lifelike mask was strange, viewers initially assumed it was the result of a magical mishap. However, by episode four of Critical Role Campaign 4, much more about Bolaire’s identity and the mask’s origins has been revealed. The central question has shifted from who Bolaire is to what he actually is.
We’ll be exploring everything about Bolaire Lathalia – his story, the meaning behind his mask, and what it all signifies. Join us for a detailed look at this mysterious figure and get all your questions answered.

Who or What Is Taliesin Jaffe’s Bolaire Lathalia in Critical Role Campaign 4?
Many viewers have been wondering about the identity of Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire Lathalia, in Critical Role Campaign 4. The answer, revealed in episode four, is surprising: Bolaire isn’t a person at all! He’s actually a magical mask – an arcane artifact that Taliesin’s character studies at the Archanade. All the “Bolaire” figures we’ve seen have been controlled like puppets by the mask itself.
What Does It Mean that Bolaire IS His Mask on Critical Role Campaign 4?
Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire, isn’t wearing a mask – the mask is him. He explains to his companions that it’s a magical object with a terrifying effect: anyone who looks at it is compelled to wear it, and when they do, the mask takes over their body and destroys their mind. Bolaire describes himself as a mask that has inhabited countless people, going back to the ancient Shapers’ War. Because he is the mask, he can possess anyone who puts it on. He’s not a person wearing a mask; he’s a mask controlling a body.

Why Was Bolaire the Mask Created?
Each deity in Aramán met a unique fate. Bolaire the Mask was specifically made to kill the Halfling god of trickery. As revealed in Critical Role Campaign 4, Bolaire explains he participated in his family’s murder of a god during the Shapers’ War, and that he awoke just before the death of Rauwyn, the god he was created to destroy. While the exact method of Rauwyn’s destruction remains unknown, Bolaire firmly believes his sole purpose is to kill gods, as he is a thing designed for that very task.
Bolaire explains that he’s spent a long time fighting and resting. He says that when he isn’t being worn as armor, he falls asleep. For years, he was worn into battle, used, and then left to sleep, only to be forced to fight again and again.
How Did Bolaire Arrive in Dol-Makjar?
Eventually, Bolaire realized he was simply going through the motions and wanted something more meaningful. He saw a chance to change his life and fled to Dol-Makjar, where he began to present himself as the person we initially meet. It’s unknown how long Bolaire can stay within a single body, but it appears he must eventually transfer his consciousness to a new one, placing the mask on a different host. He seems to have been doing this in Dol-Makjar, establishing a life and career along the way.
Bolaire also reveals that meeting Halandil Fang changed his entire life.
What Does Bolaire the Mask Look Like?

We first learned about Bolaire in the first episode of Critical Role Campaign 4, and the show gave us a detailed description of his mask. It’s made of grey clay, with dark grey, almost black lips, and empty, black eye sockets. There are cuts on the sides of the mask that look like tear tracks. Instead of eyes, there’s a tiny blue light deep within the blackness that blinks. Interestingly, the mask seems almost alive, sighing and moving like a real face.
Bolaire Has Brother and Sister Masks on Critical Role Campaign 4
Though he wears a mask, Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire, often talks about his family. He’s mentioned helping them kill a god and refers to ‘mask siblings’ who are still missing. What Bolaire doesn’t know is that other masks have been found in Critical Role Campaign 3. Before his death, Thjazi Fang asked Thaisha Lloy and Occtis Tachonis to retrieve a halfling coffin containing a broken mask. When Thaisha touched the fragments, it almost killed her, and the mask then disappeared in a strange mist. It’s currently unknown if this mask is truly lost or if it will reappear in Critical Role Campaign 3 and potentially connect with Bolaire.
What Happens to the People Bolaire Inhabits on Critical Role Campaign 4?
In Critical Role Campaign 4, the people possessed by Bolaire the Mask meet terrible fates. We see one such victim in Episode 4 – a horrifying sight of someone completely desiccated. Their skin is crumbling, with chunks of flesh missing to reveal teeth, and empty eye sockets filled with deflated, balloon-like remnants. The body is utterly dry, and, unsurprisingly, the person is dead. It’s a truly disturbing image!
We still aren’t sure how long Bolaire the Mask can possess someone before needing to move on, but it appears he does eventually need a new host.
Bolaire’s Relationship with Thjazi Fang
What’s most striking about Bolaire isn’t that he wears a mask, but his intense dislike of Thjazi Fang. Bolaire claims Thjazi Fang treated him poorly, like an object, and exploited his secret by blackmailing him into doing awful things. He says Thjazi Fang made him steal from his own library for questionable people, ultimately destroying his career and life, and describes him as cruel and hateful.
Everyone seems to admire Thjazi Fang, except for Julien Davinos. It’s interesting to hear a different, more negative portrayal of him.
Bolaire’s Relationship with Halandil Fang
Bolaire says meeting Halandil Fang and experiencing his art completely transformed his life. He considers Hal his only friend and deeply loves him, Hal’s family, and everything he creates. Bolaire explains that after spending a long time as a mask focused on fighting, Halandil showed him the beauty and happiness in the world, expanding his perspective. He seems genuinely heartfelt when talking about it.
Is Bolaire Alive?
IT’S COMPLICATED.
Can We Trust Taliesin Jaffe’s Bolaire in Critical Role Campaign 4?
Things are tricky with Bolaire. He clearly cares deeply for Hal, who is a genuinely kind person. However, Bolaire is also capable of violence – he killed someone and dismembered a body without hesitation. His sense of right and wrong is… flexible, to say the least. If we’re going to trust him, we need to consider what he says about the Thjazi Fang. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how things unfold.
