As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comics under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Supergirl film is shaping up to be quite an intriguing addition to the DC Universe. The character of Ruthye, introduced in Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is a breath of fresh air, offering a unique perspective on the classic Superman lore.
The upcoming movie on Superman appears to draw inspiration from various elements of the Man of Steel’s history. It incorporates aspects from Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman and Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman: The Movie, among others. In contrast, the forthcoming Supergirl film seems to be based on a single comic book series – Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which was released as a 10-issue DC Comics series from 2021-2022. A notable character in this film, Ruthye Marye Knoll, portrayed by Eve Ridley, is set to make her live-action debut.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Introduced Ruthye to the DC Universe
Supergirl: Girl of Future Days
Armed with a sword, Ruthye ventured into a local tavern in search of a fighter or hired gun to assist her in avenging herself against Krem. A local tough guy harassed Ruthye, but Supergirl stepped in to protect her. It just so happened that it was Supergirl’s 21st birthday, and she decided to celebrate by having a drink on this planet, where the sun is red, which causes her biochemistry to behave like that of a regular inhabitant. As such, she could get drunk here unlike on Earth. Kryptonians typically gain their powers under yellow suns, like Earth’s, but Supergirl was known for her bravery. Moved by Ruthye’s courage, she asked Supergirl to help her slay Krem of the Red Hills. At first, Supergirl declined her request, but when Krem attacked both Supergirl and her pet dog, she reluctantly agreed to aid Ruthye in her quest for vengeance.
Ruthye and Kara Zor-El Form a Bond in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
In their shared journey for justice across galaxies, Supergirl discovers several similarities with her new companion, Ruthye. Both girls lost their only parents at age 14 – a tragic event that left them shattered. As Supergirl guides the young Ruthye, she emphasizes that revenge is not the solution to their pain and encourages her to seek justice instead. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, Ruthye proves herself to be a skilled fighter. The final outcome of their comic book series (and presumably its film adaptation) is emotionally moving and breathtakingly beautiful, but we won’t give away the ending here.
Ruthye in James Gunn’s DCU
Since her last appearance in DC Comics, there’s speculation about how Ruthye will differ from her comic book counterpart in the live-action DC Universe. Given her limited appearances and well-defined character traits, it’s likely that she may remain relatively true to her source material among recent superhero movie characters. We’ll get to see this for ourselves when the film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
