The Marvel Universe expands with an array of upcoming series and movies in Phases Five and beyond, one of which is Ironheart, debuting on Disney+ in Fall 2023, starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams. Prior to her origin story unfolding, audiences were introduced to her character in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she collaborated with Shuri. Comic enthusiasts may recognize Riri’s backstory; she is a child prodigy who later becomes the newest hero to wear an advanced suit similar to Tony Stark’s iconic armor. The Comic Origin Story of Riri Willaims a.k.a. Ironheart

In 2015, Riri Williams first appeared in issue #7 of Invincible Iron Man. Fans soon grew fond of her character, portrayed as a smart young Black girl who shares a passion for technology with Tony Stark, ultimately crafting her own armor suit. Their eventual meeting led to mutual admiration. However, Riri’s creation by white male comic creator Brian Michael Bendis sparked debate, as no Black female writers contributed to her character development. Additionally, an initially controversial cover illustration featuring the teen heroine raised concerns about the representation of Black girls and women in society.

In 2016, the popularity of Riri’s character sparked the creation of her own comic series titled “Invincible Iron Man: Ironheart.” This series offered readers a deeper understanding of Riri’s origins and life experiences. Born and raised in Chicago, she lives with her mother and Aunt Sharon following her father’s passing. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Riri is granted an engineering scholarship. As a prodigious teen inventor, she secretly fabricates a suit using misappropriated campus resources, which earns her powerful adversaries in return.

In a turn of events that left her aunt disapproving, Riri transitions into a crime-fighting superheroine. This action catches the attention of tech genius Tony Stark who endorses her as the ideal candidate to assume the role of the Ironclad hero the world requires. Post the incidents of “Civil War II”, Riri steps into Tony’s shoes following his coma, later adopting the mantle of Ironheart. This is where we stand in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Tony’s selfless demise. Given the current circumstances, it seems fitting for Riri to don the suit and become the next Iron Savior. In the comics, Pepper Potts and Riri frequently interacted, with the former expressing worry over Riri’s superheroine lifestyle and safety.

In addition to her appearances, Riri is featured in some comic crossovers as well. She rescues Moon Girl, who boasts the highest intelligence in the Marvel Universe, and assists her in fending off Doctor Doom. Furthermore, this character confronts Hydra during the Secret Empire storyline from 2017 in the Marvel comics.

2018 marked the beginning of a fresh phase for Ironheart: Eve Ewing, an African-American author, academic, and native of Chicago, assumed the writing responsibilities. The comic series, Ironheart, portrayed Riri stepping into her role as a true hero more fully. She broke free from being merely viewed as a “young Iron Man” as she began to unravel mysteries surrounding a friend’s abduction.

In this time period, Riri also featured in the 2019 animated special “Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron“, where she had a storyline centered around MIT. She is associated with a team of heroes called the Champions, which consists of younger characters from the Marvel Universe such as Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, and Cyclops. However, her solo comic series, planned for 2020, was unfortunately cut short after just a few issues due to the onset of the pandemic.

In “Ironheart,” Riri teams up with Shuri, Okoye, and more characters to confront The Ten Rings. Given the events of Phase Four, it seems fitting that Riri Williams is now introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

How Will Ironheart Fit Into the MCU?

In the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the relationship between Shuri and another character unfolded in an unexpected manner. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Ryan Coogler discussed this character, stating that she serves as a kind of counterpoint to the Wakandan princess. “She offers a distinct vibe,” he said, “but she also shares some traits with characters we’ve encountered in this universe before.” In essence, Coogler explains that the movie explores the concept of foils – characters who contrast each other, but still share some commonalities. Here, we get to witness Shuri encounter someone who possesses certain similarities yet is strikingly unique.

In the movie, Riri continues her roots as a Chicago native, inventor, and engineering student who constructs an iron suit similar to Tony Stark’s. However, she has grown older, now 19 years old, making her more of Shuri’s contemporary. They bond after Riri finds herself in trouble due to a vibranium detection device she’s created. This situation displeases Namor, who intends to eliminate her so no one else can replicate the device and discover his underwater realm. When Queen Ramonda sacrifices her life to save Riri, the young hero allies with Wakanda in their brief conflict against the Talokans. Upon her return home, it remains unclear if she will resume her academic pursuits or fully embrace her role as a superhero.

What this film implies about Riri’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains uncertain; we’ll just have to be patient and find out. The movie poses numerous intriguing questions about MCU Ironheart and her personal journey, providing ample opportunity for further development through the series. We can expect Riri to encounter Parker Robbins, also known as The Hood, who employs his hood to delve into magic and darker powers. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Thorne will keep collaborating with Ryan Coogler, who plays an executive producer role in the upcoming Ironheart series.

In this trailer for Ironheart, it’s hinted that Riri will encounter some troublesome situations on her journey to ultimately embrace her role as a hero.

The show could have gone in a different direction, like exploring the Riri-Pepper comic relationship in live-action. Gwyneth Paltrow is open to reprising her role, after all. But that doesn’t seem to be the case based on what we have seen so far. It’s not impossible though. There is also a chance for War Machine a.k.a. Rhodey, who is getting his own movie, to connect with Ironheart as a guide. Considering her show is coming first, that could set up what we see in the Armor Wars film… if we ever get it.

If Riri attends MIT, there’s a chance we might catch a glimpse of MJ and Ned (current students at MIT) sharing scenes with our iron hero in the Ironheart series. The show, similar to Ms. Marvel and others, will primarily focus on developing Riri Williams as a character and her transformation into Ironheart. We’re eagerly anticipating the premiere of Ironheart on Disney+ on June 24, 2025. It’s high time we see more Black girls making their mark in the MCU with intelligence, determination, and courage.
