Who is Patch, Wolverine’s Alter Ego?

As a dedicated fan of Marvel Comics and the X-Men universe, I am beyond excited for the upcoming film, Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The opportunity to see Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a dream come true. Moreover, this film marks their first on-screen team-up and the debut of Wolverine’s classic blue and yellow striped costume and Patch alias.

In this film, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) make their debuts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the very first time. This is also where we see these two characters join forces on screen for an unprecedented team-up. Notably, Wolverine dons a costume reminiscent of his classic blue and yellow design from the comics. Moreover, this movie marks the initial instance of Wolverine being referred to as “Patch,” which is his famous alias in the Marvel universe. This film offers an intriguing exploration into the iconic personas of Wolverine.

Patch, Wolverine’s Alter ego

In this tale, Logan, also called Wolverine, is part of the X-Men team and assumed the nickname “Patch” back in 1988. When Jessica Drew’s friend Lindsay McCabe was taken over by the Black Blade, Wolverine came to her aid using his secret identity. He adopted the alias and a distinctive eyepatch, borrowing from Nick Fury’s style, which earned him this moniker. However, unlike in other stories featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, he doesn’t sport fancy clothing during these events. This unfolds in Madripoor, where Wolverine aims to stay inconspicuous by avoiding detection.

As an avid fan of Marvel Comics, I remember the thrilling moment when Wolverine adopted his iconic alias, Patch, and donned a suave James Bond-esque suit and white jacket in Marvel Comics Presents #10. This transformation took place as I followed him on his intriguing adventures in the criminal underworld of Madripoor.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: When operating under the alias “Patch” in the exotic Australian Outback, Wolverine skillfully kept the X-Men hidden from prying eyes. To blend in seamlessly around Madripoor, he adopted a new disguise and kept a low profile. In the captivating comic book, Save the Tiger, I joined forces with the kind-hearted gangster, Tyger Tiger. Together, we took down Roche’s ruthless regime, enabling Tyger Tiger to claim his territory and keep the X-Men safely concealed from public scrutiny.

Wolverine sometimes goes by the name “Patch” when he drops by the renowned Princess Bar in Madripoor, owned by his longtime friend and associate O’Donnell. He puts on this alias for rare visits to Madripoor throughout the years, but it’s hardly a secret identity since all he does is wear an eyepatch and use a new name. His behavior and attitude remain mostly unchanged, and unfortunately, his distinctive haircut still gives him away in a crowd. This disguise isn’t as intricate or effective as Bruce Wayne’s Matches Malone persona, famously known as Batman.

Will Deadpool & Wolverine feature Patch?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” the city of Madripoor is initially mentioned in a film. During this series, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes pass by the Princess Bar but don’t go inside. In an alternate comic book story “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Wolverine is shown disguised as Patch at a gambling table in Madripoor’s version of the Princess Bar. It remains uncertain if the Wolverine character from the MCU has previously visited Madripoor and assumed the Patch identity.

Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige are working on introducing the X-Men into the MCU, with Deadpool and Wolverine hinting at the beginning of this storyline. The miniseries “Ms. Marvel” suggests that Kamala Khan may have the mutant X-gene. In the final episode, Bruno Carrelli, Kamala’s friend, reveals to her a mutation. The series’ music pays homage to the iconic theme from “X-Men: The Animated Series.”

In the 2023 epilogue of The Marvels, Captain Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris) was left in a different universe, receiving assistance from an alternate timeline’s X-Men squad. This group consisted of Maria Rambeau, a variant of Monica’s late mother portrayed by Lashana Lynch, dressed as the comic book character Binary. Kelsey Grammer reprised his role as Beast in this team. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been cautiously introducing mutants and the X-Men up to this point. With Deadpool and Wolverine joining the scene, it seems the MCU may finally delve deeper into this aspect of the Marvel universe.
