Who Is Mr. Charles in DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 2?

Okay, so Daredevil: Born Again season two is officially here, and it’s kicking things off in a really compelling way. It’s been six months since the events of season one, and New York City is, well, a mess. We find Matt and Karen laying low, still determined to bring down Fisk. The premiere episode brings back a few familiar faces, but the real standout is a new character – Matthew Lillard as Mr. Charles, and let me tell you, he’s both fascinating and hilarious! The big question, though, is who is Mr. Charles, and how does he fit into the larger story with Daredevil and Karen? Let’s dive in and unpack his role.

Karen learns from a secret contact that Wilson Fisk is illegally importing weapons through the city’s port. Daredevil tracks the operation to a ship named the Northern Star, but the mission quickly goes wrong. The ship’s captain and first mate are ordered to flood the vessel if anyone tries to stop them, and they follow through with the plan. Daredevil escapes before the ship sinks, but the incident leaves the Mayor’s office with a major problem to handle.

We’re introduced to Mr. Charles, who is in Washington D.C., as he receives a troubling phone call. He unexpectedly arrives during a difficult meeting between Fisk and the Attorney General, who is concerned about controlling Fisk’s actions, specifically questioning the intensity of his “safer streets” program. Charles enters the room casually, dressed in a plaid shirt and eating a gyro, and identifies himself as being from the intelligence agency in Langley, making it obvious he has a connection to Fisk.

Things get really interesting when the Attorney General starts coming down hard on Fisk, but that doesn’t last. His phone rings, and someone – Mr. Charles, it seems – tells him to take the call. Whatever was said clearly worked, because suddenly the AG is all-in on Fisk’s ideas about taking the law into his own hands and making the streets safer. Meanwhile, Fisk instructs his man, Buck, to track down the captain and first mate of the ship, just to tie up any loose ends. The Anti-Vigilante Task Force does find them, but they only manage to kill the captain; the first mate, a guy named Christoffi, gets away.

Charles later joins Fisk and his wife, Vanessa, for dinner, but Vanessa immediately dislikes him. (And she’s right to be wary.) Fisk confronts Charles about his showy behavior, while Charles claims it was fate. We then discover that Charles’ employers are pleased with Fisk allowing them to use his port, though something has gone wrong with the operation. Charles explains his role is simply logistics – moving cargo secretly. His plan is ruthless: he intends to hire sailors who can be easily disposed of, ensuring no evidence leads back to him or his associates. He’s truly cold-blooded.

We cannot wait to see what other mysteries unfold as Daredevil: Born Again season two progresses.
