In the debut of Daredevil: Born Again, the narrative presents a fresh romantic figure for Matt Murdock, named Heather Glenn. Actress Margarita Levieva portrays this character in the series. As a result of a work arrangement by one of his colleagues, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) goes on a blind date with Heather, who turns out to be a therapist and successful author. The two quickly find common ground and their relationship blossoms romantically. Although Heather is new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she has a rich background in Marvel Comics. Here’s a glimpse into the tragic love tale of Heather Glenn, one of Daredevil’s many heartbreaking romantic encounters.
Heather Glenn made her debut in issue #126 of Daredevil, published back in 1975. This character was brought to life by writer Marv Wolfman, renowned for creating Blade and Bullseye, and artist Rob Brown. Born into a life of luxury as the daughter of Maxwell Glenn, CEO of Glenn Industries, Heather’s path crossed with Matt Murdock when she unexpectedly found him living at her ex-boyfriend Frankie’s apartment. With spare keys in hand, she walked right in and stumbled upon Matt instead. Recognizing that Matt was a more appealing prospect than the ‘creep’ Frankie, she immediately started flirting with him and eventually secured a position as a secretary at Murdock & Nelson’s law firm.
Showing compassion and kindness, Heather teamed up with Matt and Foggy Nelson to establish a law center known as the Storefront, catering to residents of Hell’s Kitchen who can’t afford expensive legal services. Although Matt found Heather somewhat bothersome at first, they eventually develop romantic feelings for each other. In time, Heather took over the role of Matt’s love interest, previously held by Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, after the series title changed to Daredevil and Black Widow. Heather aided Matt in his battle against misleading media reports that were aimed at discrediting urban vigilantes like Daredevil.
The dynamics of their bond shifted dramatically upon the arrival of Zebediah Killgrave, a character from MCU’s Jessica Jones portrayed by David Tennant. Known for his villainous role, Killgrave manipulated Heather’s father, Maxwell Glenn, compelling him to participate in severe wrongdoings. Matt Murdock, who was striving to clear Maxwell’s name, found himself confronted with the fact that Glenn, under Killgrave’s control, had committed these crimes. The burden of guilt ultimately led Maxwell to take his own life while imprisoned. During this challenging period, a saddened and distraught Heather uncovered Matt’s secret identity as Daredevil. Believing that he was responsible for her father’s death due to his initial apprehension of him, she ended their relationship. Shortly after, Heather assumed control over her father’s company.
After Heather assumes control of Glenn Industries, she finds herself in Killgrave’s crosshairs. Utilizing his powers, Killgrave forces Heather to point a gun at her own head, but Daredevil intervenes at the last moment. Eventually, Heather comes to understand that Matt was not responsible for her father’s demise, and they rekindle their romantic relationship. However, during the 1980s revival of the Daredevil comic series, things took a turn for the worse for Heather. Her inexperience as a businesswoman led to her losing control over her company, allowing criminals to seize power. Daredevil managed to dismantle the operation, but Glenn Industries suffered significant losses. Matt proposes to Heather, and she accepts. However, her hesitation to simply become Matt’s wife while continuing her career left her feeling deeply dissatisfied. And this is where things take a drastic turn for the worse.
In a bid to alleviate a toxic entanglement that was hindering both their personal and professional lives, my dear friend Foggy Nelson and my former girlfriend the Black Widow took an unconventional step by drafting “Dear John” letters, each ending things with the other. This action unwittingly led Heather down a path of alcoholism and reckless partying. She found herself in a whirlwind of relationships, one of them being Tony Stark. In her moment of desperation, she reached out to me, hoping for a rekindling of our romance. Desperate to see her, I ignored a woman in need of help during a domestic violence situation and rushed to Heather instead. (This action, while well-intentioned, clearly overstepped boundaries.)
In the comic book “Daredevil” issue #220 (1985), written by Denny O’Neil, we find that when Matt eventually reaches Heather’s house, she’s drunk and confesses to fabricating an emergency to make him hurry over. Enraged, he departs. Later on, he learns about a domestic violence case he had previously overlooked, and the victim tragically passed away. Matt holds Heather accountable and ignores her calls. She interprets this as his definitive rejection, leading her to take her own life at home. This unfortunate event is another sorrowful finale in Matt Murdock’s romantic history.
Heather Glenn in the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again
In the novel “Born Again”, Heather Glenn is portrayed as a distinct individual. It’s unclear if she was born into affluence or not, but she’s certainly not the carefree woman who got entangled with Matt in the comics. Instead, her comic book character, known for her desire to aid those less fortunate, finds expression in her real-life role as a respected and licensed therapist. We can only hope that her story doesn’t follow the same tragic ending as her comic book counterpart.
Despite making her debut in live-action for the first time, Heather Glenn has been present in a different form before. In the 2003 movie “Daredevil,” a woman named Heather ended things with Matt Murdock via voicemail. It’s reasonable to believe that character was Heather Glenn. Thankfully, the new series “Born Again” is giving her character a more substantial portrayal, and we’re eager to see where her journey takes us next.
