As an avid fan of true crime documentaries, I can confidently say that Hadden Clark’s story is one that will leave you utterly chilled to the bone. Born and raised in Troy, New York, this man had a life that was anything but ordinary. From his troubled childhood marked by harsh punishments and bullying, to his dark hobbies of slaughtering animals, Hadden’s path seemed destined for a grim end from the start.

You might recognize names like John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer from media coverage, but a new documentary series on Investigation Discovery delves into the chilling tale of Hadden Clark, an under-the-radar serial killer. Unlike many murderers, Clark is accused of two killings, yet while in prison, he claims to have carried out twelve more.

“Born Evil: Serial Killer and Redeemer,” the latest series on Investigation Discovery, delves into Clark’s life narrative and his subsequent confessions to a fellow inmate. This gripping docuseries premiered on September 2, 2024, with its pilot episode marking its debut.

Who is Hadden Clark?

Born on July 31, 1952, in Troy, New York, Hadden was brought up by Hadden Clark Sr. and Flavia Clark. From his early years, Hadden faced challenges due to the turbulent home life allegedly influenced by his parents’ heavy drinking. As a result, he endured severe discipline measures, including being forced to wear female clothing to attend school.

At his home, young Hadden developed a distressing habit of dismantling and killing animals due to the environment there. This behavior became more intense because of the persistent bullying he endured at school.

Despite having a complex character, he pursued his passion for culinary arts at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Afterward, he served as a cook in the Navy, but his diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia resulted in his discharge. Subsequently, he took up various low-level jobs to support himself after leaving the military.

Killings

At his brother’s residence, there was a tragic incident where his six-year-old niece’s playmate was fatally wounded by him. There’s suspicion that he used a knife to take the life of Michele Dorr and later buried her in a secluded forest area, far from the original location.

In hindsight, as I tended to Penny Houghteling’s garden, I became her tragic gardener. Many years ago, I took the life of her cherished daughter, Laura, who was just 24. With a knife and a pillow, I ended her life cruelly, first stabbing her, then smothering her with the very pillow that still bore my telltale prints. In a desperate attempt to hide my crime, I carried Laura’s lifeless body through the woods wrapped in a sheet, burying her far from the house where her laughter once echoed. But alas, those fingerprints of mine could not be concealed forever, and they led investigators straight back to me.

Despite attempts to conceal his involvement, his fingerprints remained evident on the pillowcase, making it easier for authorities to approach him. Upon guiding them to Laura’s corpse, he admitted his guilt. The police began suspecting him of the murder as they discovered that he resided near Michele Dorr. Later, when Hadden Clark’s brother’s previous residence was found to contain Michele’s blood, she was linked to the crime.

Hadden Clark received a sentence of two 30-year terms for the murders he committed. However, it is widely believed by family members, investigators, and even Clark himself that these were not his only victims, as he is suspected of having killed numerous other people. While serving his time in prison, he was housed with Jack Truitt, whom he perceived to be Jesus Christ.

Clark confessed all his heinous crimes to him and has admitted to having committed twelve additional murders to his cellmate. By using his relationship with Clark, Truitt was able to assist in locating Michele Dorr’s body. Clark is still being held at the Eastern Correctional Institution located in Westover, Maryland.

Ever since 1985, Bradfield Clark, Hadden’s elder brother, has been incarcerated for a grisly crime involving the murder and cannibalism of his coworker Trish Mak. This tragic incident underscores the chilling possibility that such violent tendencies may be inherited within their family. It is indeed rare for two brothers to be implicated in unrelated killings around the same time, with these crimes taking place on opposite sides of the country, as investigators note in Born Evil: The Serial Killer and The Savior.
