Who Is FOUNDATION’s the Mule? The Powerful and Mysterious Baddie, Explained

In this third season of Foundation, the anticipated character known as the Mule makes his entrance. Similar to Thanos’ gradual emergence during the latter part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga, the Mule has been a looming, ominous presence in the background. When he finally appears, the Mule brings about a devastating influence on the story, much like how Thanos altered events with his immense power and imposing personality. However, let me clarify who exactly the Mule is within the context of Foundation. Here’s a brief overview of this significant character.

In contrast to the typical portrayal of a warlord, the Mule in Asimov’s Foundation series does not rely on physical strength or weaponry. Instead, his power is psychological, able to intimidate anyone from an individual to entire planets with just his will.

Let’s take a moment to acknowledge something important before we delve deeper into the character: The team behind Apple+, specifically showrunners David S. Goyer and Bill Bost, have impressively adapted a material that was thought to be unadaptable over the course of three seasons.

Even though there have been several adjustments required in the plotlines, I must say they’re doing an exceptional job. Believe me, having read this series multiple times, I can attest that this is no small feat. Remarkably, The Mule seems to be the most captivating aspect of the narrative, and interestingly enough, the show is more accurately representing his character as it appears in the original source material than any other part so far.

What does this have to do with who the Mule is? Let’s ask the author himself…

The Mule: A Man of Mystery

In Asimov’s novels, the character of the Mule was shrouded in deep enigma, making it challenging to discern much about him as his role within the story progresses. To offer a bit of background, this elusive figure is initially presented in the novel Foundation and Empire.

Not much is known about ‘The Mule’ compared to other significant characters in Galactic history. The time when he was most famous is mostly understood through the perspectives of his adversaries, and mainly from a young bride’s viewpoint, as recorded in the Encyclopedia Galactica.

As a cinephile, I find myself captivated by the elusive nature of “The Mule.” Unlike other characters who are given names and distinct appearances, this enigmatic figure remains shrouded in mystery. Rarely does one catch a glimpse of him on screen, or even know his true visage.

Although the Mule may initially appear as a mere figurehead, throughout the original narrative we uncover some significant details about him. One such revelation is his formidable telepathic prowess, often referred to as a “mentalic” within Asimov’s fictional universe. This mental ability allows him to manipulate minds and suppress thoughts and aspirations across entire planets, transforming his most ardent adversaries into submissive followers in an instant. This skill will prove crucial, as the warlord launches attacks against both Foundation and Empire in the series, disrupting Seldon’s carefully planned schemes along the way.

The Mule Is From a Very Important Place in Foundation

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, let me share some thoughts on how the character’s origin is woven into the narrative of “The Mule.” Born and bred on Gaia, this extraordinary planet is a one-of-a-kind gem, crafted not by natural forces but by the wisdom of robots. The show presents an intriguing twist in its origins.

Gaia’s inhabitants, including our protagonist, are remarkable beings gifted with telepathic abilities and a profound connection to the environment. They learn to harmonize with the planet’s flora and fauna, creating a symbiotic relationship that transforms Gaia into a super-organism – a living entity integral to the unfolding events in the latter part of the “Foundation” storyline.

From the perspective of the Mule, he departs from Gaia when he renounces the collective unity, dismissing the “strength in numbers” ideology as mere groupthink and instead opting to employ his mental abilities to dominate and subdue others. This is a critical aspect that will become significant later in the narrative.

For the moment, let’s simply note that the character referred to as the Mule is a mutant who has been banished from his home and is widely disliked there. It’s also important to mention that he may not be exactly who you imagine him to be in both the series and the books. In both instances, the Mule displays cunning deception, so stay alert if you can as Foundation season three unfolds, for the Mule might deceive you, just as he does everyone else.
