As a lifelong fan of George R.R. Martin’s intricate and captivating world of Westeros, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Having devoured every word of Tales of Dunk and Egg, I can confidently say that this new spinoff is a masterstroke of storytelling.

George R.R. Martin’s universe of Westeros is set to come alive anew, this time through the lens of Dunk and Egg from his novella series, The Tales of Dunk and Egg. HBO is currently developing a prequel to Game of Thrones titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will take place in a timeline approximately a decade following the Dance of the Dragons.

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming spinoff series! This captivating tale will be woven from the pages of George R.R. Martin’s beloved books, “The Hedge Knight,” “The Sworn Sword,” and “The Mystery Knight.” The legendary duo, Dunk and Egg, will embark on a thrilling journey that spans Westeros – from Ashford to Dorne, Winterfell, and beyond! I can’t wait to join them on this epic adventure!

Who is Dunk?

In the upcoming series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” we’ll encounter Peter Claffey portraying Dunk, a roaming knight who isn’t bound to any specific lord – a type called a hedge knight. At first, he serves as an apprentice to an elderly hedge knight named Ser Arlan of Pennytree. After Ser Arlan passes away, Dunk takes on the moniker “Ser Duncan the Tall.” This storyline is based on The Hedge Knight.

In simpler terms, Dunk assumes possession of Sir Arlan’s armor, steeds, and wealth for his personal quest as a solitary knight, and he also chooses to educate a squire during this journey.

As a connoisseur of lifestyles and personalities, let me share some insights about Ser Duncan. His moniker, Duncan, implies a grandeur that is strikingly reflected in his towering stature, standing at an impressive seven feet. However, it’s important to note that his towering height doesn’t seem to match the perceptions of many regarding his intelligence. Instead, he is frequently seen as foolish or unintelligent. But, beneath this surface, lies a heart that is steadfastly loyal, overflowing with kindness, and bravely valiant.

Fans of Westeros are eager to witness Peter Claffey bring the essence of Dunk to life, given his background as a former rugby player. Yet, there’s some uncertainty about whether he can attain the towering stature of Ser Duncan.

Eventually, Dunk makes a pledge to serve Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast within the Reach, and embarks on a journey to Winterfell to aid Lord Stark in quelling the Greyjoy Uprising.

Who is Egg?

In his fresh adventure as a freelance knight, Ser Duncan comes across a young lad named Egg. This character will be portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell, who matches the book’s descriptions perfectly. As George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight series unfolds, we learn that Egg is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen, destined to become King Aegon V later in life.

For a young Targaryen with a claim, though it’s not immediate, his older relatives view him as posing no danger to their rule. In fact, he seems uninterested in the power struggle and cuts off his long silver-hued hair to hide his noble lineage.

In their partnership, the towering hedge knight, Dunk, assumes a protective role, while Egg, his companion, takes on the strategic planning. A pivotal moment arrives when Egg saves Dunk’s life during a dispute with Aerion Targaryen, Dunk’s brother. As the story progresses in The Hedge Knight, Egg expresses a desire to accompany Dunk on his journeys across the Seven Kingdoms, offering to serve as his squire at journey’s end.

In the far reaches of the chronology, Egg sits on the throne as King Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Unlikely, due to his low position in the line of inheritance for the Iron Throne. His brother, Maester Aemon, mentions him in passing in the world of Game of Thrones, according to Winter is Coming’s report.

Following Aegon V’s ascension to the Iron Throne, he acknowledges his long-standing friend Dunk by appointing him as the Lord Commander of his Kingsguard, thus bestowing upon him the honorary title of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
