Who is Daeron Targaryen In House of the Dragon? Alicent Hightower’s Third Son Explained

As a dedicated fan of House of the Dragon, I have been eagerly following every development regarding Daeron Targaryen’s mysterious absence from the show. It feels like we’ve been on this rollercoaster ride since the very beginning, with tantalizing hints and cryptic clues that left us all guessing.

In the House of the Dragon’s recent Season 2, Daeron Targaryen was prominently featured, leaving fans who had followed him in the prequels feeling surprised. They believed they knew everything about this character, but unfortunately, Daeron’s role was almost non-existent in Seasons 1 and 2. It’s important to remember that Daeron is the brother of well-known characters like Aegon II Targaryen and Aemond Targaryen.

Daeron Targaryen, the youngest offspring of Viserys I Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, has skillfully eluded the watchful eye of the cameras throughout the events depicted in House of the Dragon.

As an obsessed fan, I couldn’t believe it when I started watching “Game of Thrones” Season 1 and didn’t see even a hint of Daeron Targaryen. It was as if he never existed in this world. But then, something exciting happened. A new showrunner named Ryan Condal joined the team, and he began dropping subtle hints that yes, Daeron was indeed part of the story. At first, I couldn’t help but feel confused, wondering if I had imagined it all. But as Season 2 progressed, I noticed more and more references to Daeron’s situation. It was clear that something big was being saved for a later reveal, leaving me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating Daeron’s grand entrance into the story.

What we know about Alicent’s son in House of the Dragon season 2

In the second episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Otto Hightower disclosed that Daeron Targaryen was currently staying with his great-uncle, Lord Hobert Hightower, in Oldtown as a ward. Otto signaled to Alicent and made it clear that Daeron would soon join their faction.

In the sixth episode of Season 2, Daeron is brought up once more in the story. This instance sees Gwayne Hightower sharing information with Alicent about Daeron. He portrays Daeron as having a gentle disposition, reliable, and possessing a sharp wit that matches his good looks. Additionally, Daeron demonstrates impressive combat skills or, at the very least, is proficient in using a sword.

Daeron Targaryen: The oldtown enigma and why he’s missing from House of the Dragon season 1

In George R. R. Martin’s books, including “House of the Dragon” and “Fire & Blood,” Daeron’s description as being a ward in Oldtown is correct. However, it’s important to note that Daeron doesn’t actually move to Oldtown until he is twelve years old.

In response to queries regarding Daeron Targaryen’s scarcity in House of the Dragon as mentioned in George R. R. Martin’s October 2022 “Not a Blog” post, he attributed it to his character having less on-screen presence.

I was thrilled when I heard Daeron is indeed part of the show’s lore, but my heart sank when I learned that the team couldn’t fit him into the Season 1 script due to time constraints. George R.R. Martin shared his regrets, expressing how much he longed to explore Daeron’s intriguing backstory in Oldtown and the complex relationships and events connected to him.

Daeron Targaryen’s dramatic delay

Some fans anticipated Daeron would make a grand entrance in season 2 after this development; yet, it appears we won’t see that now.

In an interview with Variety, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal shared that Daeron’s current status remains unsettled. Sadly, Condal disclosed that Daeron has not been chosen to join the cast for the second season. Despite his lingering presence in Oldtown, where he grew up pondering his identity as revealed by Condal, there seems to be no compelling storyline or dramatic reason for Daeron’s return in Season 3, making it unlikely that his character will have a significant moment in the upcoming season.

Why House of the Dragon hasn’t introduced Alicent’s third son yet?

Condal explained that while Daeron doesn’t ride a dragon on screen yet, he does have one. In Condal’s view, Daeron’s role will be introduced in the story at the right moment according to the plot. Currently, however, the story isn’t ready to accommodate Daeron’s character.

George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal, the show’s creators, didn’t include Daeron in Season 1 of “House of the Dragon” because there wasn’t enough time to develop his character properly. In Season 2, introducing Daeron didn’t fit right with the storyline.

Daeron Targaryen takes flight

As the story unfolds in House of the Dragon, it’s more and more apparent that Daeron Targaryen is set to appear. In the sixth episode of Season 2, Gwayne’s portrayal of Daeron shows us that he is distinct from his brothers Aemond and Aegon.

Should the series remain faithful to the book’s storyline, Daeron will engage in combat for the Greens atop his dragon, Tessarion. He is primed to significantly impact significant battles such as the Battle of the Honeywine. If featured in Season 3, this battle could mark Daeron’s spectacular entrance as he swoops down on Tessarion, altering the outcome.

Daeron’s emergence in King’s Landing will bring exciting encounters with his relatives, including Alicent, Aemond, Aegon, and Helaena, which are anticipated by fans. His entry is guaranteed to leave a substantial mark on the ongoing conflict between the Greens and the Blacks, known as the Dance of the Dragons.
