As an admirer of Anne Marie McEvoy, I find her story to be both inspiring and intriguing. While many of us dream of stardom, McEvoy’s decision to leave Hollywood for academia is a testament to her unique vision and determination.
It’s worth noting that stepping away from the glitz and glamour of show business permanently isn’t unprecedented, although it’s quite uncommon. For instance, esteemed actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who won three Oscars, made the decision to retire in 2017, prior to the release of his last film, Phantom Thread. Similarly, Anne Marie McEvoy, who was famous for her role as Kathy Santon on Full House, has chosen to leave Hollywood and now teaches instead.
48-year-old McEvoy, known for her role in the popular ABC sitcom created by Jeff Franklin, recently appeared on the podcast How Rude, Tanneritos! alongside co-stars Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber. During the discussion, she reminisced about her time on the show and shared that Hollywood wasn’t her initial career goal. McEvoy clarified, “I didn’t aspire to be an actress; it was more about earning money for college.” Essentially, she joined the show as a means to finance her education.
McEvoy has consistently made it clear that Hollywood wasn’t her long-term plan. She shared, “I never even considered staying in Hollywood.” Instead, she revealed that her dreams lay elsewhere, such as becoming a mother and a university professor. “Everyone desires fame, right?” she pondered, but her heart yearned for the roles of a mom and an academic with a PhD.
Contrary to some assumptions that her departure from Hollywood was merely a jest, McEvoy is happily embracing her new direction. She admitted that her stint on Full House offered invaluable lessons. “I delved into the study of adolescent development and taught courses on it,” she revealed. In fact, she instructs a class using the show as a springboard to discuss adolescent topics like sexuality, substance use, and family dynamics.
The actress additionally disclosed that students eventually identified her during class. “Students would figure it out and quietly approach me after class,” she shared with Sweetin and Barber. She remembered students asking, “I thought I saw you on TV last night, was that you on Full House?” Her usual reply was, “You have an exam tomorrow, what are you doing watching TV?” She also joked that once her identity was revealed early in the semester, it became difficult to concentrate on anything else, so she chose to accept it.
Although McEvoy didn’t intend to make Hollywood her permanent home, she always treated her acting roles with dedication. “You give it your all and then you really want to get even better,” she explained. Interestingly, McEvoy agreed to reprise her role as Santoni in the 2016 Fuller House Netflix revival, despite her initial reservations. She attributes her decision to return to her daughter’s encouragement.
Previously an accomplished actor, this individual now serves as an assistant professor at the University of California, having earned a doctorate in Developmental and Educational Psychology.
