Over the weekend, Mariah Carey shared the heartbreaking news that both her sister, Alison, and mother, Patricia, had tragically passed away on the same day. The specific cause of their deaths and the exact time they occurred are currently unknown. Besides Alison, Carey also has a brother named Morgan.

As reported by The New York Times, she expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “I’m devastated to have lost my mother over the weekend. Unbelievably, it was also the day when my sister passed away in a heartrending turn of events.”

Apart from sharing other details, she disclosed that she had spent the previous week with her mother. These recent unfortunate incidents have sparked curiosity and concern regarding Mariah Carey’s family life.

Despite being a hugely successful pop artist with wealth and recognition beyond most people’s wildest dreams, Carey acknowledges that these things aren’t always sufficient. In fact, she openly admits that her relationship with her family is not flawless.

Alfred Roy Carey

Alfred Carey functioned as Mariah’s biological parent. During his youth, he dedicated service to the military and together with his spouse Patricia, they welcomed three offspring. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in 1973 when sweet Mariah was merely 3 years old. Afterward, visits from her father were limited to weekends only.

Sadly, her visits became less frequent as she started gaining recognition. Tragically, Alfred lost his life in July 2022 at the age of 72 following a long fight against bile duct cancer. Notably, before he passed away, Mariah rekindled their relationship. As a result, she paid tribute to him through a song titled “Sunflowers For Alfred Roy.”

A couple of months following his passing in October 2022, she took the time to restore his classic sports car – a task she completed on his birthday. This act might have been a way for her to hold onto a piece of him and his memory.

Patricia Carey

In my own account, my bond with my Juilliard-trained opera singer mom, Patricia, was far from ideal. As the artist behind Always Be My Baby, I confessed in my 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that our relationship wasn’t as straightforward and clear-cut as a simple ‘black-and-white.’

Following her divorce with Alfred, Patricia was granted custody of her three kids, but parenting proved to be challenging. Having previously put her career aside to start a family, she eventually established herself as a respected vocal coach.

In my own life experiences, I’ve found that my bond with my mom has been a vibrant tapestry of feelings. It’s woven with threads of pride, pain, embarrassment, gratitude, envy, awe, and disillusionment – all the colors of the emotional rainbow.

According to an article in the US magazine, the singer, Mariah, stated that she needed counseling due to her mother’s envy towards her career success. Interestingly, her therapist devised an innovative method to assist Mariah in overcoming this past hurt.

Mariah Carey shared that her therapist suggested she give new names and perspectives to the people she considers as family. So, her mother is now called ‘Pat’, Morgan used to be her brother but is no longer, and Alison was her sister but isn’t anymore.

She continued to clarify her point, stating that the action was taken to discontinue her assumption of these individuals as “mother figure, elder brother, and elder sister.”

In the year 2024, August found me bidding farewell to Patricia, at the age of 87. Despite our journey together having its share of highs and lows, I am eternally thankful for the precious moments we shared before she left us.

Alison Carey

In August 2024, Alison Carey, aged 63, tragically passed away on the very same day as her mother, Patricia. Mariah characterizes her relationship with her oldest sibling as strained.

In her 2020 memoir, she stated that it would be “wiser for me to avoid any interaction with my former brother and sister, as this would provide both emotional and physical safety.”

Beyond what’s been told in this narrative, Alison filed a lawsuit against her sister, accusing her of causing “emotional harm” through a memoir. As reported by InTouch, this legal dispute was still ongoing when Alison passed away.

Morgan Carey

In her 2020 publication, Mariah additionally discussed her relationship with Morgan Carey, who was her parents’ sole child. She claimed that upon achieving fame and wealth, her brother attempted to extract money from her.

Additionally, she discussed an altercation involving him and their father, Alfred. These claims were met with disapproval by Morgan and his lawyers, who filed a defamation suit against her in March of 2021.

In that context, it was alleged that the artist known as “The Without You Singer” attempted to gain support from the Black Lives Matter movement falsely by portraying the plaintiff as being just as violent.

Morgan’s lawyers stated that “Mariah Carey continued her remarks about police and Black people was merely the start of her frantic efforts to tarnish the plaintiff and portray herself as a victim…”

According to Page Six, the singer argued in response that her experiences growing up in a challenging and at times turbulent home situation carry great relevance for the public, particularly those facing similar circumstances.

In the month of February 2022, a judge discarded 14 out of the 16 defamation lawsuits filed against the singer. Yet, this wasn’t the conclusion as two lawsuits still remained active.

In the city of Manhattan, Judge Barbara Jaffee decided that Morgan had a valid reason to file a lawsuit against Mariah, as some parts of her book implied that he was involved in providing cocaine to high-society individuals and potentially had a criminal background.

As of October 2023, the case remained unresolved. 

Monroe and Moroccan Cannon

Mariah Cannon (formerly Mariah Carey) was in wedlock with Nick Cannon between the years 2008 and 2016. Together, they became parents to fraternal twins, Monroe and Moroccan, who were born in April 2011.

Instead of being named after Marilyn Monroe posthumously, as she was, the girl shares her name with the famous actress; on the other hand, the boy’s name reflects the interior design theme prevalent in the apartment during the moment Cannon proposed.

Monroe goes by the nickname “Roe” regularly, while her brother is known as “Roc.” On the other hand, Carey and Cannon are still sharing parental responsibilities for their children. In fact, both of these kids have made appearances alongside their mother during her live performances.
