Reflecting upon Madonna’s journey as a mother, I am deeply moved by her selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to her adopted children. Her decision to open her heart and home to these children is truly inspiring. The way she has embraced her role as a mother, despite the challenges, speaks volumes about her character.

Madonna is celebrated for her numerous number-one hits, captivating stage shows, and multifaceted family. She has six children: Lourdes, Rocco, David, Mercy, Stella, and Estere. In December of 2020, the singer known for Like a Prayer had the initials of all her kids inked onto her wrist as tattoos.

It’s time to unveil the story behind this family, a tale that many have been eager to learn more about.

Lourdes Leon (27 years old)

Lourdes Leon, the firstborn of pop icon Madonna, made her entrance into the world on October 14, 1996, right here in Los Angeles. At that time, Madonna was already a proud mother as she had given birth to her daughter with her partner, fitness instructor Carlos Leon.

Initially being the only one, Lourdes seemed to hold a special place too, perhaps as a favorite as well. Notably, Madonna penned a tune for her, titled “Little Star”, on her 1998 album, Ray of Light. This album also earned her a Grammy!

In other words, Lourdes shared in an interview with Interview Magazine that her mother Madonna was rather controlling while they were younger. She even jokingly admits that this tendency for control has been passed down to her as well.

As she grew older, the bond between Lourdes and her mother flourished. Today, Lourdes views her mother as a powerful figure who was truly forward-thinking.

At the age of 27, Lourdes has made a name for herself as a model, having collaborated with several prestigious brands such as Marc Jacobs, Swarovski, Dion Lee, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty collection, Burberry, among others.

In August 2022, Lourdes took a step similar to that of her singing mom by debuting her initial single titled “Lock & Key.”

Rocco Ritchie (24 years old)

In May 1997, Madonna parted ways with Carlos Leon. A year later, she started dating Guy Ritchie. Their son, Rocco, was born on August 11, 2000, in Los Angeles. Madonna and Ritchie did end up getting married, but they separated in 2008.

As I shared with Ellen DeGeneres back in 2012, my mom had a firm hand in my upbringing, yet I can confidently say she was an exceptional mother. During that time, I was fortunate enough to be touring alongside her, and I had the assistance of a tutor to help me keep up with my schoolwork.

Eventually, Rocco opted to enroll in a conventional school and reside with his renowned father in London, which led to a strain in his relationship with his mother and a legal custody dispute between the two parents. However, by June 2016, it appeared that everything was resolved amicably.

At a concert in March 2016 held in New Zealand, Madonna devoted the song La Vie en Rose to someone special. As reported by Closer Weekly, she also mentioned, “There’s no love more powerful than a mother for her child, and if I speak about him too much, I will start crying.”

Now, Rocco works as an actor and model. Also, he is quite a talented painter.

David Banda (18 years old)

David Banda was born in Malawi on September 24, 2005.  

2006 marked the establishment of Madonna’s charitable organization, Raising Malawi, by herself. Later in October, she embarked on a humanitarian journey to the country, where she and her then-spouse, Guy Ritchie, made the decision to adopt a 1-year-old boy named David from another orphanage called Home of Hope, situated in Lilongwe, the capital city.

As per Closer Weekly, David was reportedly battling pneumonia at that time. 

Yet, the adoption process didn’t proceed smoothly as Madonna and Ritchie overlooked a crucial condition for the adoption – they hadn’t established residency in Malawi, which is required by its laws since adoptive parents must reside in the country for at least 18 months.

Obtaining residence is crucial for legal adoptions when required. Yet, this family successfully navigated this obstacle, leading to their adoption being approved on May 28, 2008.

Currently, David is wholeheartedly accepting and cherishing his individual path, and he maintains a robust connection with his brother and sisters. During an interview with British Vogue in 2019, it was disclosed that David bears the closest resemblance to his mother among all her children.

In my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I often find myself expressing that the individual who understands me best is someone I share a deep connection with. It’s almost as if we were cut from the same cloth, or in our case, sharing more genetic material than any of my biological offspring to date.

Apart from praising his soccer talents, she confessed during an interview with Graham Norton in June 2019 that it might have been simpler for her if he aspired to be a singer instead. However, Madonna later explained that she doesn’t view this as a letdown but rather as “an opportunity for growth.”

Regarding her son’s soccer matches, Madonna mentioned that she solely observes him playing. When he is sitting on the bench instead, she tends to use her phone.

Mercy James (18 years old)

Chifundo James, known affectionately as “Mercy,” came into this world on January 22, 2006, in Malawi. She was taken in by Madonna following her divorce from Guy Ritchie in 2009, while residing in Blantyre, Malawi. This meant that the singer became Mercy’s mother single-handedly. At that time, Mercy was battling malaria.

Similar to David’s case, the process of adoption was not straightforward since the initial application was denied by the High Court. However, she eventually received approval for the adoption on June 12, 2009.

Currently, Mercy is flourishing within her multifaceted household. Back in July 2017, Madonna established the Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Critical Care – a pioneering pediatric surgical and critical care facility in Malawi.

On Instagram in January 2023, Madonna celebrated Mercy’s seventeenth birthday by posting, “Happy Birthday, dear Chifundo! Love from us all!!”

Stella and Estere (11 years old)

Stella and Ester, twin sisters, joined their family from Malawi back in February 2017 when they were five years old. They entered the world on August 24, 2012, in Malawi. In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, the singer shared that these girls embrace her as their mother and love her wholeheartedly.

The beautiful island singer shared with PEOPLE, “They felt as if they had been here all along. They quickly adapted, and over time, they came to realize that I am their mother, a fact that will never change.”

Currently, these young ladies exhibit exceptional skills in dancing as well as playing the piano. In August 2022, when the twins, Estere and Stella Mwale, celebrated their tenth birthday, a renowned global figure took to Instagram with the heartfelt caption: “Wishing you both a very happy birthday! You two radiate love, joy, and brightness in all our lives!”

In June 2023, they completed their elementary education. Madonna shared this news on Instagram and addressed her graduating offspring as “2 Queens,” wishing them a happy graduation. Among all the children, it is the twins who are most frequently featured on their mom’s Instagram posts.

Madonna’s journey of motherhood 

Back in 2017, Madonna shared details about her personal life and her decision to adopt with PEOPLE magazine.

Occasionally, she found herself shutting her eyes and pondering, “Why isn’t my kitchen bustling with joyful kids?” Given the numerous children in need of a loving home, she reflected, “What’s stopping me? Let’s get on with it!”

In a 2017 interview with PEOPLE magazine, Madonna explained the reasons behind adopting her children, stating that it’s an indescribable feeling, similar to questioning why someone fell in love with their partner.

However, motherhood hasn’t always been easy for her.

The performer made clear that since there’s no guidebook, you must figure things out through trial and error – which takes quite a bit of time and dedication. Essentially, it’s similar to mastering a craft or career on its own!
