As a connoisseur of all things stylish and intriguing, I must say that The White Lotus has truly swept me off my feet with its latest installment. Starring the talented Jason Isaacs in an unforgettable performance, this series has left me spellbound. Yet, it seems Duke University has chosen to keep a safe distance from any association with the show as it ventures into its most daring season yet.
For those who might not know, in episode six, Jason Isaacs’ character, Timothy Ratliff, can be seen donning a shirt from his former school, Duke University. At the same time, his character ponders over the idea of murdering his wife and himself to escape imprisonment, which seems imminent due to his questionable business dealings.
After the incident, Duke University’s Vice President for Communication, Marketing, and Public Relations, Frank Tramble, gave his response in an interview conducted by The New York Times.
He clarified that the Blue Devils are not associated with The White Lotus.
Hey there! I’m absolutely thrilled to share a little insight from Tramble’s recent message. You see, Duke just adores artistic flair and captivating storytelling! That said, he does want us to be mindful about one thing: if characters are sporting gear embellished with Duke’s officially registered trademarks, it might lead others to assume an endorsement or connection that isn’t there. So, let’s make sure we keep our creativity in check while still showing our love for the iconic Duke!
In a subsequent message, he emphasized that The White Lotus has been utilizing their brand without prior approval. Furthermore, they believe the way it’s used in some of the show’s visuals is problematic, doesn’t align with their values or identity, and crosses a line.
Besides the debate about his character’s wardrobe, Jason Isairs has also found himself embroiled in a different matter concerning his role in The White Lotus.
In the third episode of this current season, Jason Isaacs’ character, Timothy Ratliff, was shown without clothing, sparking debates over whether any prosthetics were used. To address these queries, Isaacs emphasized the prevalent “double standard for male actors,” drawing attention to the fact that people wouldn’t ask the same questions about Margaret Qualley’s nude scenes.
Following the backlash, Isaacs later issued an apology online.
