Which Rings of Power Have Been Forged on THE RINGS OF POWER? (Plus: Who Wears Them? And What Do They Do?)

As a die-hard Tolkien fan and a seasoned viewer of all things Middle Earth, I can’t help but feel both excitement and trepidation as we delve deeper into the world of The Rings of Power. The Dwarven Rings of Power, forged under Annatar’s deceptive hand, have always intrigued me due to their unique properties and the enigma that surrounds them.

As a devoted fan of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, it’s clear that rings are the central focus. In this second season, at least 19 Rings of Power will be brought to life by Celebrimbor, Sauron, or possibly both. However, I can’t help but wonder, how many of these magical rings have been forged during The Lord of the Rings series so far? Who wields them as their ring bearers, and what exactly are their abilities within this captivating world? More importantly, do these Rings of Power serve different purposes on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

Come along with us as we delve into the influence, not physical might, but dominance over the physical realm, and dismantle each Ring of Power that has been introduced in The Rings of Power so far.

The Three Elven Rings of Power (Forged During The Rings of Power Season One, Episode Eight)

In the final episode of season one of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” three Elven rings of power are crafted in Eregion. While it’s accurate that these rings were designed according to Celebrimbor and Sauron’s plan, it’s important to note that, as per Tolkien’s lore, Galadriel challenged Sauron, causing him to leave the Elven realm before the rings were fully created. This means that the three elven rings of power were forged solely by Celebrimbor and never physically touched by Sauron. Made from mithril, gold, and silver from Valinor, these magical rings can enhance the waning light of the Valar and prevent Elves from fading away on Middle-earth.

Who Wears the Three Elven Rings of Power on The Rings of Power Season Two?

In the second season, the Elven Rings of Power find their new owners. Despite Elrond’s hope that Círdan, one of the oldest and most noble elves in Middle-earth, would destroy them, he couldn’t bring himself to throw them into a deep ocean trench. Instead, captivated by their might and allure, Círdan returned them to High King Gil-galad. One of the rings slipped from his fingers and landed at Galadriel’s feet, seemingly selecting her as its bearer.

In the tale of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, it’s the elves – Galadriel, Círdan, and High King Gil-galad – who receive the very first Rings of Power in Middle-earth. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s original “The Lord of the Rings” lore, these Elven Rings were actually forged last, but they held the greatest power among them. In this adaptation, though, the narrative is altered to fit the story, and in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, it’s depicted that the three Elven Rings of Power were created first instead.

What Are the Names of the Elven Rings of Power?

In the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” the three Elven Rings of Power carry distinctive names: Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. The Ring Círdan possesses is named Narya. Galadriel’s Ring of Power goes by the name of Nenya. Lastly, Gil-galad’s Ring of Power is called Vilya.

In “The Silmarillion,” Tolkien describes three rings: the Red Ring of Fire, the White Ring of Water, and the Blue Ring of Air, each containing a ruby, adamant, and sapphire respectively. These serve as the basis for the Elven Rings of Power depicted in “The Rings of Power.”

What Powers Do the Elven Rings of Power Have on Prime Video’s The Rings of Power?

Restoring the Light of the Valar

In the television series “The Rings of Power,” the initial manifestation of the Elven Rings’ power is their ability to revive the dwindling radiance of the Valar in Middle-earth. Once Galadriel, Gil-Galad, and Círdan put on their rings, the change occurs swiftly. The ailing Great Tree of Lindon is instantly returned to its full splendor, symbolizing that the light of the Valar within Middle-earth has been rejuvenated as well. If the light had vanished, the elves would have shared the same fate.

This interpretation of the Elven Rings of Power’s powers makes a lot of sense based on what we know about the three rings from The Lord of the Rings‘ lore. In Tolkien’s texts, the Elven Rings of Power are known to have the ability to “ward off the decays of time and postpone the weariness of the world” (The Silmarillion) and are “directed to the preservation of beauty.” (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter 131) We see both these ideas come directly to life in the context of The Rings of Powers‘ rings replenishing the fading light of the Valar.

Foresight

As I wield the Elven Ring, Nenya, it grants me a haunting foresight. Galadriel, in her possession of this ring, glimpses disturbing visions – seeds of Sauron, once sown by her own hand, growing and choking the life out of Celebrimbor. Her Ring of Power seems to be tugging her into realms unseen.

Attraction

In summary, the Elven Rings of Power appear to exert an alluring influence over anything alive that encounters them. When Círdan displays his ring’s power to Elrond, it gathers all nearby living beings towards its radiance. Círdan seems to believe this power could be beneficial, yet it seems too potent for any being to wield comfortably.

The Dwarven Rings of Power (Forged During The Rings of Power Season Two, Episode Three)

In the initial episodes of season two from the series The Rings of Power, Prince Durin IV receives an enigmatic call from Celebrimbor in Eregion. This summons is so intriguing that both Prince Durin and his father, King Durin III, put aside their ongoing disagreements to investigate it. Given the current state of Khazad-dûm following the eruption of Mount Doom, they believe Celebrimbor and his enigmatic associate, Annatar, may possess a power that could provide aid. What sort of power are we talking about? The Dwarven Rings of Power.

In return for Mithril to create more rings for the Dwarves and all of Middle-earth, Celebrimbor and Annatar/Sauron offer a special power to the dwarven lords, crafting one ring each for the most powerful among them. Although Prince Durin harbors doubts about this proposal, he and King Durin decide to proceed, curious about where these Rings of Power might lead. This marks the beginning of the first Dwarven Ring of Power being made in episode three of The Rings of Power. Celebrimbor assures them that he can produce rings capable of healing Durin’s mountain, similar to how they restored Lindon’s Great Tree.

Unfortunately for the Dwarves, Sauron, in disguise as Annatar, intentionally casts the Mithril into the fire forging, which implies that the Dwarven Ring of Power has already been tainted by the Dark Lord, even before it’s completely made.

What Powers Do the Dwarven Rings of Power Have? And What Impact Do They Have on the Dwarves?

It remains uncertain at this point how the Dwarven Rings of Power will affect the Dwarves. However, in trailers for The Rings of Power’s second season, it appears that the Dwarven Ring of Power could potentially corrupt King Durin III, leading him to turn against his family and people.

In “The Silmarillion”, Tolkien explains that the Rings of Power belonging to the Dwarves in “The Lord of the Rings” were difficult to control because Dwarves are strong-willed and hard to influence. They dislike being dominated by others, and their thoughts are complex, making them difficult to understand. The Dwarves used their rings solely for acquiring wealth, but a fierce anger and an uncontrollable lust for gold grew within their hearts as a result of which Sauron ultimately benefited.

In essence, Dwarves were generally resistant to Sauron’s control through his rings in the world of ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Yet, the Rings of Power they possessed did stir up some of their more base desires, such as greed and anger. The upcoming series, ‘The Rings of Power’, will reveal how it depicts the influence and impact of the Dwarven Rings of Power.

Will We See the One Ring on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2?

In the show “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” it’s been confirmed that there will be 19 rings this season. But, is it likely that we’ll witness the forging of Sauron’s One Ring in season two? The answer isn’t definitive, but it’s a possibility. The account of the events leading to the forging of the Rings of Power in “The Silmarillion” is quite brief, so it’s uncertain when exactly the forging of the One Ring will take place within the context of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” However, it’s important to note that Sauron created the One Ring before the fall of Eregion in the lore of “The Lord of the Rings.” With the fall of Eregion happening this season on “The Rings of Power,” it could very well mean we might see the forging of the One Ring as well.

Currently, it seems likely that the One Ring will be forged in the closing moments of The Rings of Power season two.
