As a lifestyle expert and someone who grew up watching Richard Simmons‘ iconic workout videos, I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. It feels surreal to write about this legend, whose influence on the fitness industry and countless lives, including my own, cannot be overstated.

Trigger warning: This article references death

As an obsessed fan, I can hardly contain my emotions as I reflect on the profound impact Richard Simmons had on my life and the lives of millions. On a deeply sad day for me and his loving community, our dearest fitness icon was laid to rest in Los Angeles on July 19.

On July 14, Simmons passed away at the age of 76, a day after celebrating his birthday. According to TMZ’s report based on a obtained death certificate, Simmons was later laid to rest at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary. However, the cause of Simmons’ demise remains undisclosed, and the investigation into the manner of his death is ongoing.

Law enforcement not pursuing Simmons’ death as foul play

According to a police insider familiar with the case, the Los Angeles Police Department is currently treating the investigation on July 18 as if no foul play is suspected.

I came across some sad news recently about Simmons. On the morning of July 13, in Los Angeles, I learned that he was discovered unresponsive at his home. It’s believed that he had a fall in his bathroom the previous night. Despite concerns from his housekeeper and her pleas for him to seek medical help, Simmons reportedly refused. Tragically, when the housekeeper checked on him the following morning, she found him unconscious, and unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.

For about ten years prior to his passing, Simmons had kept a low profile in the public eye. Yet, he remained connected with his loyal fans. According to his brother Lenny, who spoke to People after Simmons’ death, he corresponded with them through letters and emails, and offered assistance whenever requested.

Richard Simmons’ enduring legacy

Back in the late ’70s, I was just an unknown guy making occasional appearances on talk and game shows. But little did the world know, a fitness revolution was brewing within me! Fast forward to 1988, and I unleashed my Sweatin’ to the Oldies workout videos upon an unsuspecting public. And oh boy, did they respond! Before long, I became the epitome of fitness inspiration.

In March, Simmons shared with us that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He encouraged his audience to seize each day and cherish their blessings as he described his treatment process to eradicate cancer cells. Just before his passing, Simmons spoke with People, revealing his plans for a Broadway show based on his life experiences.
