Four years on from Gabby Petito’s tragic demise, her family continues to be profoundly impacted by the sadness of her loss. They strive to honor her memory as they journey through their grief.
Gabby’s adventure as a YouTube content creator, chronicling her travels with her partner Brian Laundrie, tragically concluded with sorrow when her remains were found in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, in September of 2021.
On February 17, 2025, Netflix’s documentary titled “American Murder: Gabby Petito” offers an insightful perspective on Gabby’s last days, as seen through the eyes of her family members.
In June 2024, Joe Petito, Gabby’s father, told PEOPLE that he doesn’t think finding closure is possible after losing a child. “There’s no such thing as finding closure when it comes to losing a child,” Joe explained.
“A space in your heart will remain empty forever, something that cannot be filled.” Later on, Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, expressed her sentiments to PEOPLE, stating, “We’ll never experience the sense of justice we seek.” Nichole went on to explain, “It’s been three years since I last heard her voice or saw her, and that continues to be a struggle for me.
Since the heartbreaking death of their daughter Gabby, her parents have relentlessly pursued justice. They’ve initiated numerous legal actions, one of which is a lawsuit directed towards the Moab police department, alleging they neglected to secure Gabby’s safety during a traffic stop that occurred in August 2021.
In a body camera recording, it was evident that Gabby appeared distressed. However, it’s alleged that the police officers disregarded indications of domestic violence. In November 2022, they initiated a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit, asserting that had the police acted differently, Gabby could potentially be alive today. Although the case was dismissed in November 2024, her parents continue to harbor hope for further legal action.
Moreover, Nicole and Joe filed a lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s parents, Christopher and Roberta, alleging they were aware of Gabby’s demise and the hiding place of her body. In February 2024, the parties involved reached an agreement in their dispute. The attorney representing Gabby’s family announced that this settlement would aid them in moving forward and maintaining the memory of their beloved daughter, Gabby.
Despite the hardship they all face, Gabby’s biological and step-parents have discovered a means of mutual support. Joe mentioned that he, his spouse Tara, Nichole, and her husband Jim have become even more united.
Regardless of their persistent sorrow, Gabby’s family remains dedicated to preserving her legacy. By their actions, such as the production and distribution of the Netflix documentary titled “American Murder: Gabby Petito,” they aim to spark transformation and educate others.
