When The Lion King Animator Criticized Disney’s ‘Weak’ Live-Action Remake

As someone who had the privilege of contributing to the original masterpiece that was Disney’s The Lion King, I must say that watching the live-action remake left me feeling like a lion watching a hyena steal its prey – it’s just not right!

David Stephan, a key figure in the animation of Disney’s 1994 masterpiece The Lion King, has publicly criticized the live-action version, labeling it as “inexpensive” and “lacking strength.

Since its debut on July 19, 2019, the remake directed by Jon Favreau has raked in more than $1 billion worldwide. However, despite this impressive box office haul, the movie hasn’t managed to convince many critics, with some calling it an unnecessary addition.

It was evident that Stephan felt let down by the remake during his interview, as he expressed the opinion that the choice to remake the movie was primarily driven by financial considerations rather than artistic value.

Stephan expressed that if the cast of the initial Lion King film were surveyed, many would likely respond, “Really? Was that necessary?” He added, “It’s quite painful.” Stephan believes that the remake appears to be motivated primarily by financial gain rather than a genuine love for storytelling.

Stephan expressed concern about how Disney has moved towards a more business-oriented approach, which is particularly disheartening for someone like him who was involved in the initial movie production. In his words, “It’s somewhat disappointing that shareholders are now part of the decision-making process when it comes to choosing which films get produced.

He expressed remorse that Disney, once renowned for its dedication to originality and artistic ingenuity, appears to prioritize earning profit these days.

Disney has unveiled its true intentions, and it’s clear they are focused on earning profits. As an artist, this is disheartening coming from a studio known for its uniqueness and artistic integrity,” he commented further.

Stephan wasn’t impressed with the acting in the 2019 remake, especially from well-known Hollywood actors such as Donald Glover and Beyoncé. He said, “I found their performances lackluster,” further explaining that their dialogue seemed more like reading lines off a script rather than genuine emotions.

According to Stephan’s opinion, the voice acting in the movie didn’t quite manage to breathe fresh life into the classic narrative. He felt that the profound emotions which had made the original characters iconic were missing from this adaptation.

In another aspect, Stephan pointed out some issues. Specifically, he criticized the character designs, stating they seemed overly realistic. Reminding us of old wildlife documentaries, he likened them to scenes where animal sounds were added, causing the mouth movements to look awkward and mismatched with the audio.

Stephan commented, “It was reminiscent of old nature documentaries where they’d overdub voices and sync the dialogue with the characters’ mouth movements. To me, it seemed a bit low budget.” For Stephan, the design decisions and hyper-realistic animation took away from the enchantment that made the original piece so unique.
