In a candid moment, Robert Downey Jr. freely admitted struggling with an English accent for his role in the 2006 film, The Holiday. It appeared that the celebrated actor’s portrayal of the accent fell short of expectations.
Last year, Downey and Jimmy Fallon made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM. They reminisced about the audition process for the film directed by Nancy Meyers, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
As reported by the source, the actor shared that they were brought in as stand-ins, with the host requiring someone to rehearse lines with the female performers. They recounted their excitement, saying, “It was about to be our moment.” Furthermore, he joked, “At that point, I thought I needed to have a better British accent than Jude Law.” However, Kate Winslet promptly responded, “That is the worst British accent I’ve ever heard.”
In summary, the part that Chris Evans (Graham) tried out for in the Avengers ended up being given to Jude Law, while Jimmy Fallon attempted to secure the role of Miles. Unfortunately for him, it seemed that his audition did not go as planned as Jack Black was the one who eventually played the character.
According to a media outlet, Fallon expressed his views about the movie’s choice of actors. He stated that he would be happy to replace Black if the latter opted out of the part. Moreover, he showed readiness to work for less than his standard payment to participate in the film.
Later on, Fallon openly praised Downey. He admitted that being across from the actor during filming left him in awe, as it became clear to him that he was collaborating with one of the finest actors he had ever worked with throughout his career. Fallon referred to this experience as “stunning” and also disclosed that it was his last audition before deciding to exit the entertainment industry permanently, according to the publication’s report.
One of the reasons The Holiday is so beloved is its impressive ensemble cast and compelling plotline. Despite not landing a role in that particular movie during auditions, Robert Downey Jr. has gone on to enjoy great success nonetheless.
