As a devoted follower of cinema history, I have always admired the extraordinary bond between Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Their collaborations have not only produced some of the most iconic films but also showcased their unparalleled ability to bring out the best in each other.
In a straightforward chat with Cigar Aficionado magazine back in 2015, Robert De Niro discussed why he wasn’t part of the HBO gangster series Boardwalk Empire. The show, co-produced and helmed by his frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese, debuted without De Niro’s participation, which came as a shock to many considering their extensive film history together.
In the course of an interview, it emerged that Scorsese didn’t invite De Niro to join Boardwalk Empire – a collaboration many anticipated, considering their long-standing professional bond.
“Marty didn’t ask me, but it’s alright,” De Niro replied to Marvin Shanken, the magazine’s head, which came as a bit unexpected considering Robert’s past fruitful partnerships with him.
Even without being invited, I didn’t let a hint of grudge show. When Shanken playfully suggested that Scorsese hadn’t asked because I don’t often tune into the small screen, I responded with an understanding chuckle, knowing that my love for cinema is undying.
He didn’t need a reason from him, as it likely hadn’t crossed his mind to consult with me on the matter, De Niro explained. His composed and understanding reaction demonstrated their mutual respect, despite not collaborating at that time.
Despite not being involved in Boardwalk Empire, Robert De Niro spoke highly of Martin Scorsese, expressing what it was like collaborating with the renowned director. “He’s quite relaxed, he follows your suggestions, and is incredibly adaptable, taking whatever he can from every actor,” De Niro noted.
He talked about Scorsese’s approach to making actors feel supported, saying he’s unmistakable as a director and guides the piece in the direction he believes he should. This high regard for Scorsese speaks volumes about their working relationship, which has resulted in some of cinema’s most memorable films.
The partnership between Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished collaborations in cinema history. Across eight movies, they have created timeless masterpieces such as Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), and Goodfellas (1990). Their unique ability to draw out exceptional performances from each other has resulted in numerous awards and a significant influence on the world of film.
De Niro’s admiration for Scorsese, shown in his comments to Cigar Aficionado, shows their strong bond and mutual respect. While Boardwalk Empire was a missed opportunity for them to collaborate, their shared history and continued success ensure that their partnership will be remembered in the world of cinema.
