When Maggie Smith Had A Scary Reputation on Harry Potter Sets; Know Backstory Amid Actresses’ Demise

As a devoted fan who grew up with Harry Potter and its magical world, I was deeply saddened by the news of Dame Maggie Smith‘s passing. Her portrayal of Professor McGonagall brought a sense of authority, wisdom, and warmth to Hogwarts that no other actor could replicate. Her character was not just a beloved professor; she was a symbol of resilience and determination.

89-year-old actress Dame Maggie Smith, famously known for portraying Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter, passed away on September 27th. The sad news was shared via a statement from her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens. This announcement sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues alike.

The Oscar-winning actress has gained several accolades throughout her career. Still, one role that’s been legendary across generations was her role in the film series adapted from J. K. Rowling’s hit sci-fi novel series. Her character was among the few non-grey characters and came to the aid of Harry and his gang whenever required, making her one of the most beloved Hogwarts professors.

Nevertheless, despite her acclaimed career as a Shakespearean actress, she was known for an unsettling demeanor on the Harry Potter movie sets. While many behind-the-scenes clips from filming showed the cast and crew enjoying themselves, Smith often appeared reserved or stern, and she fits into this category.

Previously, The Evening Standard shared that Downton Abbey’s actress was perceived as “strong-willed” by many, a characterization which Miriam Margolyes, her fellow cast member who played Professor Sprout, confirmed. Allegedly, filmmaker Chris Columbus found the late actress so intimidating that he limited interactions and frequently delegated the task of fetching her from her trailer to young Daniel Radcliffe.

During her interview on This Morning, Margolyes characterized Smith as an impressive figure, provided people maintain a good relationship with her. “I must admit, I find her intimidating. Yes, she’s quite remarkable. Yet, she truly enhances our profession. We’re fortunate to have her,” she stated further. In 2021, while speaking with Express, the actress shared that she stays cautious around Smith as she can be “extremely imposing” when someone annoys her. “Maggie is a bit unnerving… One needs to be vigilant with Maggie because if she’s upset, she doesn’t hesitate to express it,” Margolyes concluded.

The late actress convincingly portrayed Professor McGonagall, making her character seem very real. This performance earned both admiration and dislike from viewers.
