For instance, Ryan Reynolds portrayed Nick Walker, a detective, in the 2013 American supernatural action drama R.I.P.D., directed by Robert Schwentke. This film was an adaptation of Peter Lenkov’s book “Pest In Peace Department.” Despite its large production budget, R.I.P.D. failed at the box office, earning only $78.3 million compared to its estimated production cost of $130-154 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

Yet, it might surprise some to learn that Ryan Reynolds faced a particularly challenging period in his acting career. One film after another failed to make an impact, whether commercially or critically during that time. After the disappointing performances of Green Lantern, The Change-Up, and Self/Less, R.I.P.D., released in 2013, represented the final hope for the future Deadpool star.

In an interview with the LA Times in 2015, Ryan Reynolds expressed his thoughts on reconsidering the roles he accepted during the early stages of his acting career. He admitted that he felt remorse for taking part in films solely for financial gain. Reynolds explained that these movies, which failed to make a significant impact at the box office, had negatively affected his career trajectory. He stated, “I’ve taken on roles because they offered me money, and that seemed enticing and thrilling at the time.”

He went on to say, “Upon reaching Hollywood, especially considering my background, it seemed natural for me to believe, ‘I’ll definitely take part.’ The roles that proved challenging were those requiring me to embody an idealized masculinity; I felt uncomfortable and out of place. However, in a comedy like this, I could relax and let go. There was absolutely no trace of machismo required.”

After R.I.P.D., Ryan Reynolds portrayed Jerry Hickfang, a murderer with schizophrenia, in the film “The Voices.” This crime drama garnered attention during the Sundance Film Festival. Critics praised “The Voices,” and it is often recognized as one of Ryan Reynolds’ finest performances to date.
