Previously in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Billy Crudup shared a cherished moment he had while working on Cameron Crowe’s movie Almost Famous. In this film, Crudup took on the character of Russell Hammond, the band member from Stillwater, sharing the screen with his co-star Kate Hudson who portrayed Penny Lane.
The actor mentioned they had spent around five to six weeks preparing for their role during the day and every evening. They explained that the four members of Stillwater used a soundstage close to Century City in Los Angeles, where Russell Crowe, Peter Frampton, and Nancy Wilson instructed them on playing as a rock band. He described this experience as being “remarkably extraordinary” for him.
During an interview after playing The After the Wedding character, he added that one crucial lesson he picked up for his role was to unwind. Interestingly, since he had no prior experience with playing the guitar, he found it challenging to convincingly pretend to play for the part.
He shared that the character he portrayed, Russell, was intended to be exceptional instead of just average, making his main task finding comfort and ease in a strange and disquieting setting. He went on to say, “Therefore, most of their advice was, ‘Billy, keep moving!’ Eventually, I got accustomed to this suggestion.
In my recent heart-to-heart interview, I found myself reminiscing about a memorable moment on set at the Palladium in LA. You see, there was this scene where my character engaged in a conversation with Patrick Fugit’s character, William Miller. In this exchange, I confided that his mother had left quite an impact on me, causing a bit of shock. As if that wasn’t electrifying enough, as we rounded the corner and stepped onto the stage, we were met by the thunderous cheers of approximately 1,800 fans, literally shaking their heads in excitement!
In a rudderless state, the actor observed that everything around him was completely “black as night” before the lights were switched on and he strummed the guitar. He commented on how incredibly “powerful and captivating” such a moment would feel for musicians when they are performing.
Currently, you can watch Almost Famous online via Amazon Prime Video. The film boasts an impressive cast including Billy Crudup, along with Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee, Zooey Deschanel, and Jimmy Fallon, among others.
