While on the red carpet, he opened up to PEOPLE about the joy and success in his married life.
The 69-year-old actor advised, ‘Strive to be kind, aim to be on the kind side.’ We all don’t get it right every time, but let’s make an effort to truly listen,” he said. He’s been married to filmmaker Schumacher since 1996 and they share a son named Joe, who is 25, and daughter Olivia, who is 22.
In 1991, they crossed paths when the future wife joined the play Peter Pan, where the actor was playing Captain Hook. In a past interview, Simmons shared that he was instantly smitten upon seeing Schumacher for the first time. He reminisced about exiting the parking lot in his borrowed vehicle and spotting their “dance captain strolling with this attractive, tiny blonde,” who is now his spouse.
He mentioned that he had made an effort not to appear as the one staring awkwardly at this attractive, young woman,” he continued. The actor from Juno remembered his encounter with Schumacher in her dressing room prior to their performance, where he unintentionally committed an embarrassing faux pas on his exit.
He shared that upon knocking, she replied, “Enter.” Similar to many dancers, she was clad in her dance attire beneath regular clothes. Trying to maintain composure, he attempted to act casual and wished her good luck. However, as he exited, he accidentally bumped his toe against the dressing room door, emitting a squeal reminiscent of a 4-year-old.
Regardless of the mishap, he somehow won over his future spouse, and eventually, his affection was returned. He humorously remarked, “I guess I still managed to catch her eye.” It turned out that Schumacher had also developed feelings for him during their initial encounter in the parking lot, a feeling shared by him as well.
A significant amount of time passed before Michelle revealed to me that she had asked, ‘Who is that?’ The dance leader explained, ‘Ah, that’s J.K., he’s heterosexual. He’s playing Captain Hook,’ as Simmons noted.
