In a groundbreaking move, long-term James Bond franchise managers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have transferred full creative authority to Amazon MGM Studios. This decision wasn’t made lightly, as the studio reportedly forked over approximately $1 billion to gain control over the 007 brand.
Amazon splashed out a staggering $8.5 billion to buy MGM and kick off their latest business combination. The agreement, masterminded by ex-MGM board chairman Kevin Ulrich, had an initial estimated value of between $3.5 and $4 billion. However, the ultimate cost was much higher because of the potential access to the Bond franchise.
Due to Broccoli and Wilson’s continued involvement, the studio found it challenging to explore innovative ideas within the well-known franchise. To remedy this issue, an extra $1 billion was spent so that Amazon MGM could have full control over the creative aspects.
As reported by Deadline, the agreement for the streaming service to acquire sole ownership of the Bond series is not finalized as of now. It’s speculated that some upcoming Bond projects might involve a degree of joint control.
According to the news outlet, one factor that motivated Amazon to secure control over the Bond franchise was a substantial agreement they made with MGM prior to the merger. Additionally, Amazon’s acquisition of the James Bond franchise followed closely on the heels of another significant announcement.
More recently, the broadcaster unveiled intentions to establish a global cinematic distribution division, slated to commence operations by the upcoming year, as per Deadline. This significant move represents a major milestone for Amazon, yet insiders close to Broccoli are said to be expressing dissatisfaction over her decision to agree to this arrangement.
According to one source, she’s tenacious but has grown weary of the struggle; another source suggests that Broccoli chose to pass on his legacy as an emotional choice.
Is there a possibility that Amazon’s acquisition might negatively impact the franchise’s success? The main apprehension stems from the fact that traditional film studios often invest heavily in production and promotion, unlike streaming platforms which may not have the same level of financial investment or adherence to industry standards. Consequently, the outcome could be unpredictable.
As reported by Deadline, high-ranking officials at Amazon are keen on implementing precautions aimed at preventing any future mistakes or mishaps.
