Reflecting on the life of Kathryn Crosby, a Hollywood icon who graced our screens and touched countless hearts, I find myself in awe of her extraordinary journey. From humble beginnings as Olive Kathryn Grandstaff in Texas to becoming a beloved actress, wife, and humanitarian, she embodied resilience, grace, and a zest for life that was truly inspiring.
90-year-old actress Kathryn Crosby, famously recognized for her roles in timeless films like Rear Window and Anatomy of a Murder, passed away peacefully on Friday evening at her home in Hillsborough, California. This information was confirmed by family representative B. Harlan Boll, who stated that she died from natural causes, with loved ones by her side. As reported by Entertainment Weekly.
In the realm of Hollywood’s golden age, I, a humble admirer, found myself captivated by a radiant figure named Grace Crosby. Known for her mesmerizing performances in the 1950s and 60s, she was more than just an actress – she was the enchanting widow of the inimitable Bing Crosby, a legend whose name echoes through the annals of entertainment.
Kathryn Crosby, originally named Olive Kathryn Grandstaff, was born in the town of West Columbia, Texas, in the year 1933. Her fame grew following her victory in a beauty pageant that eventually granted her an opportunity to undergo a screen test alongside actor William Holden, which significantly boosted her career.
Ever since I embarked on my cinematic journey, back in 1953 – just a few steps beyond the University of Texas at Austin’s hallowed grounds – I’ve been graced with the chance to share the silver screen with some of Hollywood’s most illustrious names. From humble beginnings as a supporting actress, I found myself alongside legends like Charlton Heston, Ginger Rogers, Dean Martin, and Jimmy Stewart in iconic films such as Rear Window.
As Crosby made more prominent appearances in films like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959), her career flourished. However, after her wedding to Bing Crosby, she decided to step away from the limelight.
In the year 1954, Kathryn found herself face-to-face with Bing Crosby during her tenure as a columnist for her local newspaper. Her job required her to conduct interviews, and it was on the set of White Christmas that their friendship blossomed. Due to various postponements, including health concerns for Bing, their wedding took place in 1957.
In the year 2014, during an interview with Smashing Interviews, Crosby expressed that our paths frequently crossed, and we’d arrange to get married, but he’d face unexpected issues like kidney stones or other serious complications. We continued to wait, and I continued to work. Eventually, we were able to secretly tie the knot.
After getting married, Kathryn Crosby primarily stepped away from acting. In 1963, she trained to be a nurse and published her autobiography titled “Bing and Other Things” in 1967. She also made sporadic television appearances, frequently alongside her family, on shows like The Bing Crosby Show and in her husband’s holiday specials.
Following Bing Crosby’s passing in 1977, Kathryn penned another book titled “My Life with Bing,” which hit the shelves in 1983. She made several TV and stage appearances of note, including her role in the 1996 Broadway revival of State Fair. In the 1970s, Crosby even hosted a daytime talk show, The Kathryn Crosby Show, based in San Francisco.
For over 16 years, she continued her dedication to charitable efforts, organizing the Crosby National Golf Tournament held in Bermuda Run, North Carolina. In the year 2000, Kathryn wed Maurice William Sullivan, and they spent a joyful decade together until his unexpected passing in a car accident in 2010.
