At Comic-Con, I chatted with a well-known Hollywood visual effects specialist who deciphered the hidden events in the post-credits scene of “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. This information could have gone unnoticed by some enthusiasts.
Acknowledgment: It’s possible that this topic was previously addressed. Regrettably, I didn’t catch it while watching the scene.
Warning: Spoilers follow.
Franklin Richards Heals Doctor Doom
Towards the closing scenes, baby Franklin Richards employs his abilities to resurrect Sue Storm. However, a hidden detail hinting at significant consequences is subtly shown even during the end credits – this revelation was made by the visual effects artist.
Upon a closer inspection, a scene depicts the youthful Franklin with his hand resting on Doctor Doom, portrayed by the renowned Robert Downey Jr., and it’s clear that he is also mending him in this instance.
Why Doom’s Face Matters
As per the dedicated Fantastic Four enthusiast, who adores the film and appreciates Sue Storm’s powers as well as the appearance of Galactus, this crucial scene sheds light on the reinvented character of Doom in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday”.
Doom’s healing process is closely linked to his preoccupation with beauty and perfection. As we see in the comics, Doom’s animosity and self-doubt stem from his physical deformity, so depicting Franklin restoring his facial appearance taps into this underlying psychology of Doom.
Marvel Wants You to See RDJ
In addition, we talked about how this scene’s explanation served as a reveal of Robert Downey Jr.’s face. Similar to how The Mandalorian eventually unveiled Pedro Pascal’s face due to his popularity, it’s possible that Marvel didn’t intend for RDJ to remain hidden behind the metal mask for too long, especially considering this significant new role in the MCU. Interestingly, there are now rumors suggesting that his character might persist beyond Avengers: Secret Wars.
Lots of unanswered questions
The end-credits sequence for the Fantastic Four raises several intriguing mysteries. For instance, why did Franklin manage to heal Doom? Could this be the same Doom hinted at earlier in the film when they mentioned Latveria?
I proposed an idea that the adult Franklin Richards from the future might be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. as Doom, but when I inquired discreetly of the visual effects artist about this possibility without revealing any spoilers, he hinted that it’s not actually Franklin.
