Okay, so episode six of *Peacemaker* season two… wow. It had a huge cameo from the DCU! Seriously, if you haven’t watched it yet and want to stay spoiler-free, I’d recommend pretending you’re traveling to a universe where *TopMob* never happened – a truly awful thought, right? But honestly, just watch the episode, and then come back, because this cameo is a big deal and explains a lot.
Even though the new *Superman* movie was a hit in theaters, James Gunn quickly made it available for digital viewing. He hinted this was to allow fans to watch it before the second season of *Peacemaker* arrived. The reason is now clear: Gunn plans for *Peacemaker* to connect directly to the upcoming *Superman* sequel, *Man of Tomorrow*, and he’s cleverly linked all three stories together with a surprise appearance. Nicholas Hoult, playing Lex Luthor, showed up unexpectedly in the sixth episode of *Peacemaker*’s second season. The U.S. government enlisted his help, and now they’re working with a supervillain who craves public adoration.
Rick Flagg, Sr. was frantic. He couldn’t find Christopher Smith, and even worse, he couldn’t locate Peacemaker’s Quantum Unfolding Chamber – a device crucial to protecting the United States and the world. He’d just witnessed in the movie *Superman* the devastating consequences of tampering with alternate realities. A massive tear in dimensions had split Metropolis in two, and without Superman’s intervention, the entire world would have been destroyed.
With Harcourt and Economos unavailable, Flagg had nowhere left to turn. He needed to find Smith’s portal, and the only person who could help was the one expert who truly understood them. The General required the assistance of the man who originally created the rift causing him so much concern – Lex Luthor.
The director of A.R.G.U.S. visited Lex Luthor in prison at Belle Reve, Louisiana. Luthor wasn’t interested in a deal with Flagg; he simply wanted to see what Flagg was willing to offer. Though Luthor believed he could manipulate Flagg, the General understood Luthor’s nature. He wouldn’t grant Luthor his freedom, but he offered something Luthor desires even more: a chance to be seen as a hero. This opportunity for redemption is especially appealing to Luthor, a brilliant man who desperately wants the public to like him.
Okay, so Luthor wasn’t just passively listening – he was actively making a deal. After Flagg left, it came out that Luthor got exactly what he wanted: a transfer for Flagg to the Van Kull Maximum Security Prison (which, for comic fans, is in Metropolis). Honestly, Sasha Bordeaux couldn’t believe that was *all* Luthor got out of it, and she was spot on. Turns out, Flagg Sr. revealed the real kicker – they’re now officially partners with Lex Luthor. It’s a pretty significant development, and I have a feeling it’s going to pay off big for Luthor down the line.
The U.S. government is giving Lex Luthor a chance to rebuild his reputation by helping with a major crisis: stopping a dangerous vigilante widely seen as a joke. As part of this deal, Luthor was transferred from a high-security prison in Louisiana to a facility much closer to Superman – in the city Luthor once tried to destroy. Interestingly, the upcoming movie *Man of Tomorrow* will show Superman and Luthor working together, and they may have to team up to save Metropolis, the country, and even the world.
The appearance of Lex Luthor in an HBO Max series has already created a strong sense of connection within the growing DC Universe. What happens in *Superman* significantly affects the second season of *Peacemaker*, and *Peacemaker* will, in turn, influence the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow* series. This unexpected crossover has also formed an unlikely alliance, making Superman’s protector, Rick Flagg Sr., indebted to the untrustworthy Lex Luthor – a difficult and dangerous position for both Flagg and the organization A.R.G.U.S., as no one wants to owe a favor to someone like him.
Lex Luthor’s unexpected appearance gave us a glimpse of what’s to come in the DC Universe, including his surprising alliance with the hero he despises. However, the season isn’t over yet! With two episodes of *Peacemaker* still to go, we might see even more big-name characters make appearances this year.
