As a devoted fan of Chicago Med, I can wholeheartedly say that April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) has been nothing short of a beacon of resilience and grace throughout her nine-season journey. From the heart-wrenching train derailment in the pilot episode to her poignant goodbye in Season 6, April’s life experiences have not only mirrored the trials and tribulations faced by our beloved characters but also those of millions across the world.
At Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) stood out as a diligent nurse, particularly in her close collaboration with Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett). Renowned for her composure under stress and exceptional patient care, April also fostered deep connections with her nursing colleagues in the Emergency Department. A glimpse into her personal affairs was provided when she began dating Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), a development that sparked some workplace friction among her peers.
April made her debut in the initial episode of the series, where she played a crucial role in managing patients following a significant train accident. In the first season, she started dating Tate Jenkins (played by Deron J. Powell), a former NFL player whose child had previously required treatment for ingesting magnets. Unfortunately, April was hurt by a belligerent sports fan in episode 18 of that season, resulting in a tuberculosis diagnosis.
As April’s relationship with Tate came to an end, a bond between April and Ethan started developing instead. In Season 2, Episode 23, her brother Noah Sexton (played by Roland Buck III) spotted the growing connection between April and Ethan. At first, April insisted there was no romance, but in the episode by the Chicago River, she and Ethan shared their first kiss.
In the third season, they officially became a couple. Throughout this time, they encountered difficulties, such as April’s struggle to conceive and a temporary issue involving Dr. Crockett Marcel (played by Dominic Rains). By the 19th episode of Season 5, Ethan decided to end their relationship due to deeper problems than just Crockett’s presence.
At the conclusion of Season 6, April decided to part ways with Chicago Med and advance her studies by enrolling in a Nurse Practitioner program. This choice was inspired by her encounters with COVID-19 patients during her tenure at the hospital, which prompted her to reevaluate her career aspirations.
She gained entry into the program, causing her to depart from Gaffney to embark on this fresh career journey. This shift represented a significant transformation for her character, leading to less frequent appearances on the show during the initial episodes of Season 7.
In the first episode of Season 8, April made an appearance again, this time visiting Ethan at a cemetery following the death of his father. Since then, she had graduated from her Nursing Practitioner program and discovered that Ethan remained unattached. Their encounter was not merely a casual meeting; it carried a deeper significance. In Episode 5, April observed Ethan caring for a challenging patient, which left her in admiration of his personal development. By the sixth episode, it was evident that they had reignited their romantic feelings towards each other.
In the eighth season’s ninth episode of Chicago Med, April and Ethan spent their last moments. Their big day was marked by their marriage, and following their nuptials, they embarked on a new journey together. They hopped into their Docs on Wheels van, all set to launch their mobile medical clinic and kickstart their fresh life.
Over the course of nine seasons on Chicago Med, several original cast members like April, Dr. Will Halstead, Natalie Manning, Sarah Reese, Connor Rhodes, and Ethan Choi have decided to part ways with the series. As the show heads into its tenth season, only three original actors continue their roles.
