What Is the Seafaring Kaiju in MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS?

The first episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season two hints at a major development. Trailers have introduced “Titan X,” a creature so powerful that all other Titans fear it, and the episode, titled “Cause and Effect,” offers the first clues about its existence. The story flashes back to 1957, where a young Lee Shaw, along with Bill and Keiko Randa, are investigating reports of a new Titan off the coast of Chile. Their discovery in a small village leaves them deeply worried.

The group arrives in a seemingly deserted village. Bill Randa discovers a strange, prehistoric-looking creature—possibly part of a much larger animal—hanging in a local tavern and starts taking pictures. This upsets a villager, who clearly doesn’t want outsiders to know about it. After a brief altercation, the group realizes they’re unwelcome and decides to leave. However, a tavern worker who speaks English offers to lead them to a cave that might offer some explanations, with the condition that they leave town immediately afterward.

So, this woman leads us to this incredible cave by the sea, and inside are these ancient paintings. They depict some massive sea creature rising from the ocean – seriously, it’s huge compared to the people in the painting! Bill Randa immediately thinks this is where a new Titan, a sea-dwelling one, hangs out – and he makes a good joke about ‘stomping grounds’! The local woman explains that the people here have been waiting for this creature, which they call ‘Dios del Mar,’ or the God of the Sea, for generations. They believe it’s a blessing, bringing them a rich harvest from the sea. I have a feeling this ‘God of the Sea’ is going to be a big deal in the current timeline of the story, and that older Lee Shaw will finally come face-to-face with something he only caught glimpses of years ago.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season two is now streaming on Apple TV+.
