Throughout the series Talamasca: The Secret Order, a central mystery revolves around finding something called ‘752’. Named after the year the Talamasca organization was founded (752 A.D.), 752 is rumored to be a book containing all of the Talamasca’s knowledge, created as a safeguard. This backup became crucial after a fire destroyed the Talamasca’s main library in Amsterdam in 1972. The show’s characters have been searching for 752, though many doubt it even exists. However, episode six reveals the truth about what 752 actually is – and it’s not what anyone expected. It turns out 752 isn’t an it at all, but a who.
In the final episode, “The 752,” Helen (Elizabeth McGovern) discovers the truth about her twin sister, Emma, who was lost to her in childhood. An ex-Talamasca agent reveals that Emma had an incredible gift from a young age: a perfect photographic memory. She could recall specific details from any day of her life, like the weather, or even count the bricks in a building years later. She could also read a book once and remember every word perfectly, forever. Because of this unique ability, the Talamasca turned Emma into a special research subject – a project known as the 752.

Growing up, Emma devoured every book in the Talamasca library, committing it all to memory. She essentially became a walking encyclopedia of the Talamasca’s thousand years of research. When some within the organization feared that powerful individuals intended to misuse this knowledge, they destroyed the library. Emma, now known as Doris (Céline Buckens), was then designated “the 752” – a living archive the Talamasca could rely on indefinitely.

Doris possessed valuable knowledge that would be lost upon her death. To prevent this, the Talamasca, an organization led by a man named Houseman, arranged for her to become a vampire in 1985. They chose a weaker vampire to turn her, deliberately limiting her powers – unlike powerful vampires like Lestat and Louis, she couldn’t read minds or stop time. This was intentional, making her easier to control and ensuring the Talamasca could secure the valuable ‘752’ – the knowledge she held. Doris briefly escaped their control, but returned when her friend Kevas was killed while searching for the 752, becoming involved with Guy. Ultimately, Doris and Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton) fled England, protecting the 752 from those who would exploit it – though the threat remains.
The Talamasca organization in Anne Rice’s novels doesn’t have a clear real-world counterpart. While inspired by historical groups, Rice significantly alters key details – the founding date differs, and the library doesn’t share the same fate. The Talamasca in her books is shrouded in mystery, but focuses less on dominance and more on knowledge, perhaps because two of its founders were ghosts, existing on a different plane. The series hasn’t yet fully explained the origins of this unique version of the Talamasca.

The AMC series, including Interview with the Vampire and the Talamasca spin-off, reveals that the Talamasca organization actively manipulated the published version of Daniel Molloy’s vampire interview. Characters like Raglan James, involved in illegal vampire blood trading, and agents like Houseman, who are willing to create vampires, demonstrate a darker side to this version of the Talamasca – they’re willing to operate secretly to achieve their goals. While the details of Talamasca 752 don’t quite match Anne Rice’s original portrayal, they fit with the more complex and potentially untrustworthy Talamasca presented in the AMC series. If Talamasca: The Secret Order gets a second season, we can expect to learn more about this organization and see how closely the show adheres to Rice’s established backstory, or if it will forge its own path.
