As a dedicated fan who’s been following Solange Knowles‘ musical and personal journey for years, it’s truly heartwarming to see her open up about her health struggles. Her resilience in the face of multiple chronic conditions such as POTS, Sjögren’s syndrome, and MCAS is nothing short of inspiring.
Recently, Solange Knowles drew attention when she disclosed her diagnoses of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Sjögren’s syndrome, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). She made this revelation in response to Shaun Ross’s post discussing his own POTS diagnosis.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS for short, refers to a condition where a person’s heart rate increases more than normal when they stand up from a seated or lying down position. This condition is categorized as orthostatic intolerance, as defined by the Cleveland Clinic.
For most people in good health, their autonomic nervous system efficiently controls their heartbeat and blood pressure, no matter their posture. But for individuals with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), the body finds it challenging to balance blood vessel tightening and heart rate adjustment, resulting in fluctuating blood pressure.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my insights on this fascinating health condition known as Sjögren syndrome. In simple terms, this syndrome causes my glands to produce less moisture than usual. This deficiency leads to persistent dryness that affects me extensively across my body, with my mouth and eyes being particularly affected. According to trusted sources, this is how it unfolds in those who are afflicted.
Additionally, Solange discussed Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), a condition characterized by severe bouts of swelling, rashes, difficulty breathing, nausea, and numerous other symptoms. In extreme cases, it may lead to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. As per the website referenced, this occurs when mast cells mistakenly alert the body’s immune system about a perceived threat in the system.
In a comment on The Cranes In The Sky singer’s post, it was written, “I am sending you an abundance of love and strength, Shaun, as well as to everyone else who is grappling with the challenging, perplexing, and isolating symptoms of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome!
Later on, she brought up Dysautonomia International, a charitable group dedicated to enhancing the livelihoods of individuals struggling with autonomic nervous system disorders, as stated on their official site.
I’d like to express my heartfelt appreciation. The team at @dysautonomiaintl was an exceptional source of help for me, and I owe a debt of gratitude to the ‘spoonie community’ for supporting me through my most uncertain moments.
Ross responded to Solange’s comment, expressing his appreciation towards her. He reminded her that she had known him since his teenage years, when he was bursting with energy. In turn, Solange shared that this encounter significantly altered her perspective on many things and made it easier for her to navigate them. Moreover, she conveyed her deep appreciation for Ross.
