What Is Mithril, the Rare Dwarven Metal on RINGS OF POWER?

As a seasoned gamer and Tolkien enthusiast, I’ve spent countless hours delving into the rich lore of Middle-earth, from the towering peaks of Khazad-Dûm to the verdant vales of Eriador. The latest addition to Amazon Prime’s The Rings of Power, mithril, is a captivating gem that has left me both enchanted and eager for more.

The Rings of Power is a beautiful ode to Tolkien’s Middle-earth, sharing deep cuts but also expanding the lore. The mythical mithril is an example of both. In the Second Age, the dwarves of Khazad-Dûm, also known as Moria, discover mithril as we see on The Rings of Power. The rare ore will bring fame and fortune to their kingdom… and also trouble. But for now, the dwarves’ discovery of mithril is momentous. But what is the precious ore, and where else have we seen it? Here’s everything you need to know about The Lord of the Rings‘ mithril.

What Is The Rings of Power‘s Mithril and Why Is It So Precious?

It’s thrilling for people who live near mountains to come across a completely new mineral. Recently, humans have just discovered the term “gray shimmer” as the dwarven name for Mithril, which is mentioned in “The Rings of Power”. Since they are unaware of its specific attributes, Durin’s encounter with Elrond raises questions about his intentions. Although Elrond wasn’t initially aware of its true purpose, it is later revealed that the elves are actually seeking mithril. They presume it was crafted during a conflict between good and evil when lightning struck a tree bearing the light of Silmaril

In the future, Mithril could be transformed into armor and weaponry, along with rings. It will cost ten times more than gold. Eventually, Mithril won’t have a price once it is no longer mined. However, for now, what everyone knows is that it is lighter than silk but stronger than iron

As a miner deep within the depths of Khazad-Dûm, I can attest to the perilous nature of Mithril mining – quakes constantly threaten to collapse the shafts. King Durin III, ever vigilant, has temporarily halted the entire operation in The Rings of Power, a prudent move indeed. However, I have faith that Prince Durin IV’s determination will eventually overcome, and the riches of Khazad-Dûm will once again thrive with this precious discovery. By the Third Age, a single shirt crafted from Mithril would be worth more than the entire Shire and all its treasures combined

What Is the Dwarven Practice of Resonating Stone?

In the world of Middle-earth as depicted in “The Rings of Power”, a novel practice is introduced: singing to stones. Disa, upon discovering mithril, explains how to distinguish earth, ore, air, and water within a mountain. “Sing to it correctly,” she advises, “each of those parts will echo your song back to you.” Elrond watches in awe as the rock moves when she sings, freeing trapped miners. This method allows dwarves to determine where to mine, tunnel, and leave the mountain undisturbed. Although it seems prudent, we fear their pursuit of mithril may lead to danger on “The Rings of Power”

Ithildin in The Rings of Power

In season two of “The Rings of Power,” a new application of Mithril emerges. Celebrimbor, an elf, informs his smith, Mirdania, that there’s just enough Mithril left from the Elven Rings to craft one more item. When in its Ithildin form, Mithril can only be seen under moonlight and otherwise becomes unseen. It’s known that this valuable form of Mithril will be utilized shortly for constructing the Doors of Durin, thus strengthening the alliance between elves and dwarves

Mithril in The Lord of the Rings Movies and Books

As an ardent Tolkien fan, I can’t help but marvel at the significance of Mithril in his epic tales, gracefully woven throughout both trilogies of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings”. Bilbo himself describes it as delicate as a feather yet robust as dragon hide. In the captivating tale of “The Hobbit”, Thorin bestows upon Bilbo a resplendent shirt adorned with Mithril rings, impervious to any blade’s piercing edge. It was in this treasure trove hidden beneath Smaug’s mountain lair where we discovered the shimmering allure of Mithril

Eventually, he hands over the mithril vest to his nephew Frodo for his perilous journey to destroy the One Ring. This ancient armor proves vital during their passage through the mines of Moria, which had once produced the mithril long ago. Just like others wearing secret protection, Frodo unbuttons his shirt to disclose the mithril vest only when everyone believes him dead, leaving them all astounded. The mithril armor saves Frodo’s life again in the climactic moments of The Return of the King

Across Middle-earth, there are still fragments of the precious metal, mithril, lying about. You see, Nenya, Galadriel’s ring, is crafted from it. As I’ve learned, elves discovered a way to forge ithildin, a special metal, using mithril. This metal mirrors only starlight and moonlight, marking the entrance to Khazad-Dûm’s West-gate. The guards of Gondor’s citadel even wear mithril helmets. Later on, my dwarven kin, including myself (Gimli), rebuilt the gates of Minas Tirith using this precious metal

In numerous fantasy tales and gaming scenarios, Mithril is frequently encountered. This term, or variations of it, is commonly associated with a radiantly beautiful and scarcely found metal frequently utilized in armor. The legacy of Tolkien’s invention endures
