As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) over the years, I must say that ‘What If…?’ is undeniably one of the most intriguing and innovative projects to emerge from the House of Ideas. The third season, currently unfolding, is a testament to the show’s commitment to delivering engaging storylines and bringing back beloved characters from the MCU.
The third season of ‘What If…?’ is now wrapping up its final episodes. As was the case last year, new episodes are being dropped every day for eight consecutive days. In this new installment, a number of significant characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have made a comeback, with their original actors reprising their roles. These include Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector/Moon Knight, and Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, among others.
Among the thrilling newcomers for Season 3, you’ll find the character of Storm. Interestingly, the producers mentioned that if they had known about the X-Men and mutants while planning Season 3 plotlines, these characters would have significantly expanded their presence within the series.
In a chat with ‘Agents of Fandom,’ the director of ‘What If…?’, Bryan Andrews, expressed that if he’d known Disney owned the rights to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, he would have wanted to incorporate him in Season 3. Unfortunately, the season was already deep into production and it wasn’t feasible to introduce the character at that stage.
Looking back, Andrew realized he regretted not incorporating more mutant characters into the season. Unfortunately, they weren’t aware that Disney would acquire the rights to the Fox characters in time, meaning they missed out on featuring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
Yet, he continues to be optimistic that additional characters from the past may appear in upcoming ‘What If…?’ series installments. He’s particularly pleased that Storm was included in this season, considering it a positive development.
Looking back now, it seems we were regretting our choices due to the time-consuming nature of these projects. We felt that perhaps we could have created more mutant characters this season, oh dear me, what a shame! However, at the moment, we had no idea Disney would be reacquiring all Fox properties, which might have allowed for a Hugh Jackman appearance and other exciting developments. Oh well, it was out of our control.
Perhaps, I might be fortunate enough to witness more thrilling adventures akin to “What If…?” in the future, and maybe even celebrate alongside those extraordinary characters. Yet, having Storm among us is already quite remarkable.
The work on Season 3 of ‘What If…?’ started in July 2022, which coincided with A.C. Bradley’s revelation that the second season was her swan song at Marvel Studios. Subsequently, it was made known that Season 3 would mark the end of the show.
As a devoted admirer, I’m sharing the news that Winderbaum announced the conclusion of our beloved series. This decision stems from larger aspirations within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It seems the story has reached its natural ending point, but there’s hope for a return in the future.
