What Happened When NSYNC Alum Lance Bass Came Out Of The Closet In 2006? Singer Says ‘I Lost Everything’

As a lifestyle expert, I find Lance Bass‘s story both heartbreaking and inspiring. His experiences serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the entertainment industry, particularly in the early 2000s. However, it’s uplifting to see how he has navigated these obstacles with grace and resilience.

In 2006, Lance Bass, who is known for being an NSYNC band member and singer, publicly acknowledged that he is gay, surprising many people. However, this announcement seemed to negatively impact his career as he shared on the Politickin’ podcast in December 2021 that a significant CW pilot project he was connected to lost him due to his sexuality, which had been disclosed in a People magazine cover story that year.

As I was preparing to film our sitcom on The CW, the pilot was just around the corner, but then they told me something unexpected: “Unfortunately, we can’t move forward with the show anymore,” they said. The producers felt that maintaining my authenticity as an artist might conflict with portraying a convincing straight character.

In addition, he shared with the podcast hosts, Gavin Newsom and Doug Hendrickson, that many directors who knew him suggested indirectly that they wouldn’t be able to cast him because they found it difficult to overlook his sexuality.

“Being so well-known has caused people to only see you as gay, which has made them overlook other aspects of you,” Bass explained. He lamented that this led to him losing everything. The former member of NSYNC acknowledged that even his agents encountered the same problems and ultimately faded away. So, he was forced to start over and reinvent himself.

The artist known for singing Bye Bye Bye admitted that his career took a significant turn when he revealed his sexual orientation. “It was indeed a potentially devastating move for my career,” he noted, but then expressed optimism, saying, “However, I soon noticed many successful stories in the entertainment industry, and I’m thrilled about it.” He further emphasized that today’s generation is more open-minded and appreciative of individuality.

Due to the change, Bass has been contacted by various directors lately, who had earlier avoided him due to his sexuality – being gay. He finds this situation both amusing and ironic. However, he considers himself a person who lets go of past grievances.

He expressed a high level of empathy, acknowledging that business is simply business, and it can be tough, but he doesn’t carry resentment. In an interview, he also opened up about his time in the spotlight as one of the most famous boy bands from the 90s and 2000s, while struggling with being closeted.

Bass admitted he’d long been aware of his sexual orientation, accepting that he might need to conceal it throughout his lifetime.
