Actress Julia Garner is gearing up to reappear on screens with the upcoming Marvel film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Prior to its grand debut, Garner has addressed the criticism she’s faced regarding her portrayal of Shalla-Bal in the Pedro Pascal-led production.
At first, it was thought that upon joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Garner would take on the role of a female equivalent to Silver Surfer, as imagined by fans.
When people learned that the actress from Inventing Anna was going to play the part of the eternal Empress of Zenn-La and the lover of Silver Surfer/Norrin Rrad, she faced criticism from fans on social media.
Julia Garner’s reaction to fans calling her out for playing Shalla-Bal
During a chat with the BBC, Julia Garner stated that she would continue performing her duties, even in the face of negativity. She elaborated, “I’ll simply carry on doing my job, and since it’s ‘Shalla-Bal’, it’s unique in its own way.
Eventually, the fans quickly took a liking to the character after the movie’s trailer was released, which effectively silenced any initial criticisms or trolling.
As a devoted admirer, let me share what the movie star expressed in our recent conversation: “It’s truly heartening to see folks connecting with it, much like any other creative endeavor. Honestly, I feel nothing but gratitude for being part of this dance.
Speaking about Shalla-Bal, she made her debut in Marvel comics back in 1968. Interestingly, before now, her character hadn’t been portrayed in any live-action productions.
When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the actress explained that she had a basic understanding of the Silver Surfer character before joining the project, but delved deeper into his persona once she became involved.
Additionally, she mentioned that prior to embarking on the project, she had immersed herself extensively in the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer comic books. She was well-aware that the storyline for this particular Fantastic Four adaptation would diverge significantly from previous movie renditions.
Alongside Garner and Pascal, the cast for Fantastic Four also includes Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be out in theaters on July 25.
