In an unexpected twist, I found myself caught off guard when I graced the screen for the premiere of Finding Your Roots‘ season 11, airing on Tuesday, January 7th. For those not in the know, this episode marked my appearance on the esteemed show.
According to Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s explanation, the actress had a complicated emotional bond with her father, Feliciano Genuino Salonga Jr., as he tended to be emotionally detached within their household, despite being known for his playfulness in other social settings.
It turned out that the assumptions regarding his past were indeed accurate, as verified by Gates, when an old newspaper article was found detailing Feliciano Salonga Jr.’s early days serving in the Navy’s Merchant Marines. The twist being, he had once missed a boat in Honolulu and was later questioned about this incident in the media.
As I delved deeper into the captivating story of my guest, I learned that her grandfather, Feliciano P. Salonga, hailed from the vibrant Philippines, a territory under American stewardship during his birth. In search of new horizons, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a boilerman, aiming to forge a connection with the land that would eventually say farewell.
Following the Pearl Harbor attack, the U.S. decided to free Filipinos who were working actively, with the hope that they could find a way to live while Japanese soldiers targeted Philippine civilians. Despite numerous casualties, Salonga Sr. managed to survive this ordeal and was marked as “missing in action” from May 6, 1942, until March 4, 1945.
Following this revelation, the actress admitted she hadn’t known about it beforehand. The show’s presenter mentioned that he believed the artist might have been concealed, and that the actress’s father was only twelve years old when the event occurred.
Salonga stated, “It was a particularly sensitive period for anyone, possibly explaining why he didn’t always show strong emotions, at least not openly.
The actress explained, “Being the eldest son, he may have felt a strong obligation to assume the role of head of the household and bear its responsibilities. This sense of duty might have instilled in him a feeling of, ‘Life is brief; I should make the most of it.’ ” She further commented, “This could have also given him a perspective that life offers limited opportunities, so he should seize them.
