Growing up, I remember eagerly awaiting each new piece of information about these iconic weapons and their roles in the storyline.

If you’re an ardent Star Wars enthusiast, chances are that either you own or yearn for a blue-hued lightsaber reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker. Over the years, fans have been spellbound by Anakin and the symbolism behind his lightsabers. However, did you realize that Anakin actually wielded six distinct lightsabers throughout his journey?

In the galaxy of Star Wars, Anakin stands out as one of the Jedi’s mightiest, yet his reputation is not just that of a Sith; he is intricately complex with numerous imperfections. Lightsabers, these iconic weapons, hold immense power within the Star Wars universe. Each of Anakin’s lightsabers bears a distinct imprint and symbolizes various story arcs throughout the epic saga.

In some instances, Anakin Skywalker’s lightsabers served to enhance his character development, particularly when portraying his ineptitude with weapons and tendency to misplace them. Across multiple films and series, Anakin Skywalker is seen brandishing a grand total of six lightsabers, and here’s what we’ve learned about each one.

Anakin Skywalker’s First Blue Lightsaber & The Appearance Of the Green Lightsaber

Anakin Skywalker’s narrative in the Star Wars universe significantly evolved from “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” to “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.” The shy boy audiences recognized in ‘The Phantom Menace’ was now a mature teenager, exhibiting a strong-willed Padawan learner.

The transformation resulted in the well-known moment of Anakin receiving his first blue lightsaber, a significant event depicted in several pivotal scenes during Attack of the Clones. Regrettably, one of the most indelible instances where Anakin utilized this blue lightsaber was the gruesome Tusken Raider rampage. In that scene, Anakin, driven to desperation upon learning his mother had been tormented in the Tusken Raider encampment, lashes out in a violent attack.

Yet, this wasn’t the traditional blue lightsaber we know from Star Wars. Instead, the blue lightsaber shown here was damaged during Attack of the Clones. Even Skywalker implied that Obi-Wan might have killed him if he discovered he had broken his lightsaber and suggested he possessed other lightsabers.

As Anakin’s blue lightsaber was shattered during the Battle of Geonosis, he had no weapon to take into combat. In this situation, he borrowed the green lightsaber from another Jedi, Nicanas Tassu. However, it remains unclear if or when the lightsaber was given back to its original owner. This has led fans to speculate that it might have been returned eventually.

Skywalker’s Second Blue Lightsaber & Using Count Dooku’s Lightsaber

In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi lightsaber was first introduced. Subsequently, the tradition of the lightsaber persisted in the saga.

Despite legends suggesting that Anakin Skywalker transformed into Darth Vader, he still utilized his lightsaber, now glowing a fiery red. This weapon was first seen in A New Hope when Luke Skywalker used it, and later resurfaced in the sequel trilogy, with both Finn and Rey yielding the iconic blue lightsaber.

As a devoted fan, I can share an intriguing revelation about that iconic blue lightsaber from the original Star Wars trilogy. Contrary to some reports suggesting it was damaged by Anakin, it was actually Obi-Wan who wielded it after their fierce duel on Mustafar. This is the same confrontation where Obi-Wan chose to leave Anakin for dead, marking the beginning of his transformation into Darth Vader.

In the movie “Revenge of the Sith,” Anakin Skywalker didn’t only wield his blue lightsaber during that film; in fact, at the beginning of the movie, he uses not only his own blue lightsaber but also Count Dooku’s red one to behead the Count. This double-lightsaber act is a hint of Anakin’s impending descent into darkness.

Although we didn’t see Obi-Wan Kenobi’s blue lightsaber in the original Star Wars prequels on screen, it is established in the comic book canon that he had one. The color change from blue to red in a lightsaber is caused by a special crystal called a “kyber” crystal bleeding, and obtaining one isn’t based on chance. Eventually, Anakin Skywalker undergoes the transformation into Darth Vader, which includes gaining Sith eyes and acquiring his own red kyber crystal-powered lightsaber.

Entry Of Darth Vader’s First & Second Red Lightsabers 

Following the surprising twist of fate, I discovered that Anakin Skywalker, now known as Darth Vader, wielded a crimson lightsaber. In the 2017 comic book “Darth Vader” issue #4, it was revealed that Vader obtained this lightsaber from a Jedi named Kirak Infil’a, who carried a kyber crystal that could bleed within its hilt. According to Sith lore, Vader won this lightsaber in a fierce battle with Infil’a, taking his life and claiming the saber as his own. However, in the comics, Darth Vader’s lightsaber was shattered during a heated confrontation with numerous bounty hunters.

It’s intriguing to note that, despite his destroyed lightsaber, Vader held onto the kyber crystal from it, hinting that this very crystal was also employed in his iconic red lightsaber. Though Anakin Skywalker’s second blue lightsaber is well-known as a Jedi weapon, paradoxically, Darth Vader’s equally renowned red lightsaber from the same period shares an equal spotlight.

In the original three movies, Anakin Skywalker, who later became Darth Vader, employed this lightsaber during his fights against both Luke Skywalker (in Return of the Jedi) and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Subsequently, after his confrontation with Luke in Return of the Jedi, he returned to the light side of the Force before passing away. Notably, this was Anakin’s final lightsaber.

In the show Ahsoka, Vader was depicted using his traditional lightsabers as well, which turned out to be the original ones, making a total of six by the series end. Like Anakin Skywalker before him, these lightsabers have had their own unique journey.
