As a seasoned observer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I must say that the character development of Billy Maximoff in “WandaVision” has been nothing short of captivating. Coming to terms with his true identity and inheriting his mother’s formidable powers, this young man is standing on the precipice of greatness.
In the sixth episode of “Agatha All Along,” titled “Familiar by Thy Side,” we journeyed back three years to when Joe Locke’s character, Billy Maximoff, entered the body of a young Jewish boy from Eastview. This was after Wanda’s magical barrier, or Hex, crumbled, and her twins vanished into their origin. Billy’s consciousness then moved into the deceased William Kaplan’s body. Unaware of his true identity and origins, Billy eventually sought refuge at Agatha Harkness’ doorstep.
Unfortunately for William Kaplan, at his bar mitzvah party, Lilia – a palm reader known to Patti LuPone – predicted a grim destiny for him. She envisioned his life dividing into two paths. Moreover, she foresaw that his second life would require concealment not only from witches but even from herself. It was Lilia who cast the sigil spell upon him.
Following William’s palm reading session, there was an unexpected event at the neighboring Westview involving the Hex, forcing everyone to leave their party in a hurry. This event coincided with the finale of WandaVision, where William and his parents were hurrying home. Along the way, they noticed the Hex shrinking, but the chaotic situation caused by this incident made William’s mother lose focus and she ended up having an accident.
Upon the occurrence, William’s son was instantly lost. Yet, neither his parents nor the responding police officer, Alice Wu-Gulliver who also happened to be a witch, recognized that William had perished. Instead, they believed him to be unharmed. This was due to an unusual circumstance where, as Wanda’s hex vanished and took her children with it, Billy inadvertently inhabited William’s body. The audience, however, understood that it was actually Billy who was present, since “William” cried out, “Tommy!”, the name of his swift twin.
For the next three years William/Billy kept his secret. He pretended amnesia was the reason he couldn’t remember anything from before the accident. The one thing he knew for sure was that he had died. He also knew there was something very different about him, because he could now hear peoples’ thoughts when they got emotional.
Eager to uncover the events of the fateful crash day, he looked to residents of the Hex for answers. However, those from Westview remained silent about the truth, a fact the government attributed to a botched Avengers training exercise. The only individual with direct knowledge who was willing to speak was Evan Peters’ character, Ralph Bohner. Despite his initial reluctance, he shared information about Agatha Harkness and how she became imprisoned in Westview. Furthermore, Ralph disclosed that Wanda Maximoff and Vision had two offspring named Billy and Tommy.
Due to Agatha’s impressive online persona, Billy discovered that she was an ancient witch who had been accused of causing several devastating events over the last few centuries. Additionally, he found out about the Witches’ Road and ways in which he could assist Agatha in lifting the curse that his mother Wanda had cast upon “Agnes.
Following the revelation of Agatha’s distorted view of her cop drama, the series swiftly returned to current events in Agatha All Along. This is where Agatha emerged from the murkiness and reentered the Witches’ Path to confront Billy. She referred to him as “special” and commended his extraordinary abilities. Granted he had violated the rules, but that was precisely why he had lived, much like she had in Salem years ago. It was a reason to rejoice rather than punish. So, it seemed, he had killed Lilia and Jen. However, Agatha herself had slain numerous witches before. What truly mattered was that they were both still alive and prepared to complete The Road.
As a youngster, I wasn’t thrilled about the comparisons to Agatha. I didn’t see a future for us together. Yet, when I acknowledged that my budding witch abilities were beyond my control, I reluctantly consented to journey alongside her, though I vowed to never fully trust her wisdom.
If Billy intends to secure that one precious item, he has no other option. He’s certain his sibling Tommy is somewhere out there. However, he’s uncertain about their location or how to contact him. The only way for Billy to reconnect with his brother is by completing The Road, a task that, according to the internet, has been achieved only by Agatha Harkness in history.
Agatha had better be certain that’s truly what Billy Maximoff desires, for the Scarlet Witch’s son may seem young and inexperienced, but he is not one to underestimate. His immense power remains untapped, and his mother’s anger only adds to the concern over his uncontrolled magic abilities. To make matters worse, Billy shares Agatha’s rage, which she alone is privy to.
A volatile mix of anger and immense strength poses a significant risk for Agatha, as well as anyone who dares cross her path. If he perceives a larger benefit than locating Tommy, his actions might alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe irrevocably.
