WELCOME TO DERRY Showrunner (and Singing Voice of Aladdin) Wrote Pennywise’s Creepy Song

Everyone’s still talking about the season finale of It: Welcome to Derry, where Pennywise was finally defeated in 1962. One of the most unsettling moments featured Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise singing a creepy song, “Everytime We Say Goodbye,” to frightened high school students. Surprisingly, the song was written by the same actor who voiced Aladdin in the classic 1992 Disney movie! And it gets even more interesting – Brad Caleb Kane, the voice of Aladdin, is also a co-showrunner on Welcome to Derry. What a twist! He’s gone from the world of Agrabah all the way to the terrifying town of Derry. It just goes to show how unexpected careers in Hollywood can be.

The episode opens with a creepy song that brings to mind Stephen King’s Carrie. The scene echoes the novel when Pennywise traps the students of Derry High in the gym, where they desperately scream to escape. This happens after Pennywise kills the principal and horrifyingly uses his body as a puppet. He then takes the stage and sings a disturbing song: “When I close my eyes, and I dream of you/I see your pretty faces, and I taste them too/But my-oh-my, how I wish to cry/every time we say goodbye.”

Pennywise lets out a terrifying scream and reveals the Deadlights, causing the frightened children to float into the air. He then attaches them to his sinister carnival wagon and pulls them through the foggy streets of Derry.

On the official It: Welcome to Derry podcast, the creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, shared that they came up with the idea for the song. Knowing that co-showrunner Brad Kane had a background in music, Andy Muschietti asked him to write a song including the phrase “Every time we say goodbye.” Remarkably, Kane returned with the finished song in just ten minutes, and Muschietti thought it was perfect.

He explained that the music became particularly unsettling when the show’s composer created a sound resembling a decaying orchestra. This moment is one of the most disturbing in the show, especially considering it came from the same voice that originally sang the cheerful song “A Whole New World.” The music is so menacing, it makes you wonder if Aladdin might have a touch of the villain Jafar within him.

All of season one of It: Welcome to Derry is now streaming on HBO Max.
