Before the successful launch of Welcome to Derry on HBO Max, the creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, shared their long-term vision for the show. They plan a three-season story that will explore different periods in Derry’s history, focusing on three specific times when Pennywise appeared: 1962, 1935, and 1908. Each season will rewind 27 years to reveal more about Derry and the origins of Pennywise. The current season takes place in 1962, following Lilly, Ronnie, Will, and Rich as they investigate the disappearances of local children. However, episode three offered a preview of season three, taking viewers back to 1908.
The episode begins at a carnival near Derry, where a young boy—later revealed to be General Francis Shaw—visits a haunted house and has a frightening encounter. It’s clear Pennywise is involved, signaled by a glimpse of a clown with red balloons. Afterwards, Francis befriends Rose, the Native American owner of an antique store we’ve seen before. Francis spends the summer with Rose, but their peaceful time is threatened when he wanders off into the woods.
He sees the man again, and this time, the image pursues him through the forest. Rose bravely rescues Francis using the slingshot he’d given her. She explains that the entity remains within the woods and shares everything they’ve learned about it. Rose also believes that once Francis leaves Derry with his father, he’ll likely forget what happened, and that’s exactly what occurs. Francis forgets, but Rose doesn’t, and the experience profoundly impacts her.

Kimberly Guerrero, the actress, shared with TopMob that her character still carries a torch for her first love. According to Guerrero, the heartbreak from his departure was profound, even at a young age, and led her character to prioritize her responsibilities above all else. She understood she was meant to be a protector and keeper of ancient wisdom, and she felt she couldn’t risk opening her heart to another relationship. Because of this, she never found romance again, and her first love, Francis, remains a special part of her heart. While she remembers their time together with fondness, it also reinforces her dedication to her life’s purpose.
Years later, in 1962, Francis and Rose meet again, but now they’re on opposing sides. Francis is determined to locate a powerful entity and weaponize it for military purposes. Rose, however, is focused on protecting the land and ensuring the safety of Derry and the surrounding areas from the potential consequences of reckless military action.
It’s likely we’ll see more of young Rose and other children in the third season of Welcome to Derry. The show will also probably delve deeper into the mysterious sideshow seen in visions – specifically, a cart with Pennywise and a clown face. In one vision, a voice challenges someone near the cart, suggesting a significant connection between the sideshow and why IT chose the form of Pennywise.
We’re also getting more details about the events of 1935, which will form the backdrop for season two of Welcome to Derry. It’s now revealed that the Cadillac discovered buried with bodies in episode two belonged to Al Bradley, the head of the Bradley gang. They were all killed in a major shootout that happened in the city center.
Fuller has indicated that the creature was seen in Derry, a detail taken directly from the IT novels and even hinted at in the show’s opening sequence. If the show continues for its planned three seasons, we can expect to meet the Bradley gang and see the events of that infamous, violent day in Derry. It’s exciting to see how the show is weaving together elements from all three planned seasons, and fans are hopeful we’ll get to see the complete story unfold.
