Episode 7 of Welcome to Derry was heartbreaking, as the beloved character Rich Santos tragically died while saving Marge. Their budding romance ended before it could truly begin, dashing hopes that they might eventually marry. Fans had even theorized a connection between Marge and Richie Tozier from the IT films, suggesting Richie was her son. The series finale confirmed this speculation: Marge is actually Margaret Tozier, Richie’s mother.
In this episode, Lilly, Ronnie, and Marge embark on a risky but courageous quest to rescue Will. They find Pennywise pulling a cart full of lifeless children, trying to escape the range of the pillars’ power. Despite the frightening, foggy, and icy conditions, the girls try to pull Will to safety.
Pennywise attempts to attack, but the weapon stops him. He then circles the group and manages to grab Marge, pulling her aside. Instead of immediately harming her, Pennywise starts speaking to her, calling her Margaret Tozier. Confused, Marge corrects him, stating her name isn’t Tozier, and Pennywise reveals he knows it will be someday. He also tells her that her future son, Richie, and his friends are the ones who will eventually defeat him. (It’s touching to think of Marge unknowingly honoring her friend in this way!)
However, Pennywise doesn’t experience time like we do, so he plans to kill Marge and stop Richie from ever being born. Marge is shocked and terrified by this, especially after almost dying before. Luckily, Dick Hallorann manages to disrupt Pennywise’s plans. Later, Marge shares what Pennywise told her with Lilly. Lilly believes Pennywise was simply trying to scare Marge, but Marge is certain he’s capable of traveling to the past to eliminate their family line.
The show is setting itself up well for future seasons, which will explore the events of 1935 and 1908. There were strong hints that Lilly’s mother was involved in the events of 1935, but she’s likely forgotten due to time and Pennywise’s influence – which could explain her reliance on medication. We’ll also likely meet someone connected to Marge during the 1930s. It’s great that both Marge and her son, Richie, survived their encounters with Pennywise and lived to share their experiences.
