WELCOME TO DERRY Confirms a Massive Pennywise Theory That Changes Everything

The creators of Welcome to Derry previously told us not to trust anyone, which fits perfectly with a town where a sinister force messes with people’s heads and exploits their deepest fears. Episode five really drives home how messed up things are, revealing that someone Lilly deeply trusted has been manipulating her – and it’s all connected to Pennywise.

Lilly and Ronnie get into a heated argument about everything that’s occurred. Lilly believes the ancient weapon that protected her from Pennywise can be used to return to the sewers and finally defeat the clown, but Ronnie points out how close they came to dying and blames Lilly for the trouble caused by her father – a criticism that has some truth to it. Trying to move past it, Lilly goes to school, but another terrifying vision forces her to leave and seek refuge at Ingrid Kersh’s house.

Ingrid works at Juniper Hill Asylum and is the only adult Lilly trusts with everything that’s been happening. While exploring the house, Lilly finds a photo album and sees a picture of Ingrid with a man she vaguely recognizes. The realization of who he is hits her when Ingrid walks in and she briefly sees the man dressed as Pennywise standing behind her, making her understand the connection.

A memory from 1935 shows Ingrid leading a young girl from Juniper Hill into a basement, searching for the clown Ingrid had mentioned. Sadly, the girl dies during this encounter. However, Ingrid believes she sees her father’s face and his clown-like mannerisms in the creature, and feels she can somehow rescue him. Because Ingrid isn’t frightened of the clown, it seems unable to hurt her.

Ingrid confesses she intentionally became friends with Lilly and even praises her for bringing Pennywise back to life. She reveals she was the clown they saw at the graveyard, explaining she wore a costume from her past. Ingrid asks Lilly to help her find her father and return him, but Lilly responds by cutting herself with an old weapon and leaving Ingrid’s house.

That decision will likely have a disastrous chain reaction. It seems very possible that Ingrid was the one who anonymously reported where Grogan was hiding. The deaths expected at the Black Spot will be her way of trying to draw Pennywise’s attention back to her. This is a troubling situation. Unlike Mrs. Kersh in past IT stories, this person isn’t a creation of IT itself.

Ingrid Kersh is surprisingly connected to Pennywise – she’s actually his daughter (or, more accurately, the person who inspired his terrifying form). She and her father arrived in Derry in 1908, and she’s remained ever since, working at a mental asylum and hoping to find someone who can help her rescue him. It seems highly probable that Ingrid will play a significant role in future seasons of IT: Welcome to Derry.
