We Live in Time Director John Crowley Reveals He Was ‘Stunned’ After Florence Pugh Agreed To Shave Her Head To Play Almut

In her upcoming film titled “We Live in Time,” Florence Pugh assumes the role of Almut opposite Andrew Garfield. To convincingly portray this character, Pugh went to great lengths; at one point in the storyline, Almut is diagnosed with cancer and receives treatment for it.

In a conversation with People magazine, director John Crowley shared that Florence Pugh was incredibly dedicated to her role in We Live in Time. To accurately portray Almut and convey her character’s experiences, she consented to an extensive makeover, which even included shaving her head. Crowley mentioned that he pondered various methods to achieve a bald look for the Oppenheimer actress, but it was Pugh who came up with creative ideas for the transformation.

He recalled that before meeting the actress, he talked to his hair and makeup team about how they could achieve the look if they can’t shave the head, saying, “So I had all of my sort of less good ways of doing it in mind, but before I even got to say anything about any of that, she [Pugh] was, ‘I’m shaving my head by the way.'” 

The director added that he was taken aback by her dedication, expressing his surprise since he had expected her to be busy with an upcoming Marvel project. He clarified that he didn’t attempt to dissuade her from shaving her head, emphasizing that he was “astonished” by this decision.

Crowley mentioned that Florence Pugh perfectly fit into a space due to a slight delay in the release of her Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Thunderbolts, where she will once again portray Yelena Belova. He further stated, “Florence is fearless and incredibly dedicated.

The movie, as per the official summary, traces the journey of Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield). Their lives intersect in an unexpected manner that sets the course for significant changes. We witness key moments of their relationship – falling in love, establishing a home, starting a family – through which a harsh reality surfaces that threatens to disrupt their bond.
