We Had a Look at the Alternate Ending of ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ & It’s Sad as F–k

As a seasoned X-Men fan since the days of Fox and the original trilogy, I can confidently say that the alternative ending for Dark Phoenix is a heartbreaking blow to the core of my gaming soul. The optimistic, bittersweet conclusion we received was already a tearjerker, but this? This is the sort of ending that would have me reaching for the virtual tissues and considering a temporary leave from the game world altogether.

Prior to Disney’s purchase of Fox, the X-Men series paved the way for an expansive shared story universe, surpassed only by the Marvel Cinematic Universe later on. The X-Men films generally did well, with some exceptions, and their fans, including myself, held a deep affection for them.

Apart from traveling back in time, they skillfully altered the plot by introducing younger versions of familiar characters and eventually merging them together. Although X-Men: Dark Phoenix wasn’t the last X-Men film, it wrapped up the primary narrative on a melancholic yet hopeful tone.

A different conclusion for the film has emerged online lately, and we’ve taken a peek at it. This alteration completely transforms everything, and we must say that this ending ranks among the saddest we could conceive within the X-Men universe. As to whether it would have been an improvement… that’s something for you to judge based on the video below!

Before we actually show you the footage, you’ll probably remember that the movie adapted the comic book storyline of the same name in which Jean Grey becomes a threat to the whole world in the form of Dark Phoenix. A fight ensues in which Jean Grey, of course, loses her life, and the whole mutant world is devastated by the loss of one of the most powerful mutants, but also of a very dear and close friend. Many regrets, a lot of pain… but the original ending was optimistic, albeit bittersweet.

Following the recent event, I, being a gamer, proudly witness the installation of a new sign labeling our old school as “Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters.” This change is dedicated to the remarkable young mutant, with Storm now teaching and Hank McCoy taking over as headmaster – a position he holds with fond memories of Raven Darkhölme. Over time, Professor Xavier steps down after years of championing mutant rights. In the heart of Paris, I share a game of chess with Erik, an event he accepts from our esteemed professor. As we start to play, a blazing phoenix soars above us in the sky.

And that was the original ending we all saw. Now, take a look at the alternative ending:

In a different version of Dark Phoenix, X-Men, the ending is incredibly sad. The school is deserted and empty, with Charles Xavier left all by himself. If I were watching it in the cinema, I’d seriously consider leaving life.
